in a winery of the mind

in a winery of the mind

A Poem by jacob erin-cilberto

in a winery of the  mind

a spinster's mirror

face in the dark,

she floated amidst flickering stars

a life threatened by insomnia's sword

she felt the sharp pinprick of anxiety

took another sip of the calming courage

then another, then another, then

curling into a fetal spill

splashes of a former self

reflecting,

she saw the bottom of the wine glass

just as her heart hit the underside

of who she had been

before love drowned her

in the murky battlefields

of Gethsemane

where praying only made the bottle

seem half-full.

To grow old and still not have the courage to see that glass half-full, it's maddening and sad.

Hmmm....a garden where disaster waits....indeed, the bottle of wine can be such a place. Insomnia does horrid things to a person's psyche. Is the wine giving her courage or only making things worse? Difficult to determine. A dark intense write. I liked it. Lydi**

i see this piece, as mournful as it is, as a warning to those who grieve. the warning says that it's okay to grieve in order to process loss, but then to use the strength needed to get through it, to move forward.

wonderful write.

i think this is marvelous: especially "curling into a fetal spill" ... you keep the metaphor going through out ..it lends strength to the form ... those two things strike me right away .. the closing reference to Gethsemane tweek my thoughts ... it is meditative for me ... that last line! i thought you might reference the blood that Jesus' sweat ...
but you kept it very human .. in that fetal spill ... accomplishing in prayer the glimmer of a half full wine bottle ... sorry sir ..dont mean to pick your poem apart ..but i think it is grand ..positively smart ..i think you paint very well!

Potent & powerful! Sometimes a poem feels like a novel and this page turner certainly poses along epic legends.

some are unable to make it past the loss of love, and spend the rest of their lives fermenting old memories only to drown in the same...great write...

I have made the mistake of believing romantic love to be God and the object of my affection my saviour … funny I found myself with a half-full bottle a couple times too with no one to drink the other half. Crazy smart write here … bravo.
