Death's Drive

Death's Drive

A Poem by Eric Cox

Driving down the highway late one night

I heard a loud roar and saw bright lights

coming down the highway and in the wrong lane

the thought of facing death really blew me away.

Death was driving, I was waiting for an end to this nightmare

Tires were burning, Death was smoking them everywhere.

The roar of Death's engine echoed that night

flames shooting from the custom pipes

Death's supercharged Chevy blazed

burning rubber down the highways.

Death was driving, I was waiting for an end to this nightmare

Tires were burning, Death was smoking them everywhere.

I switched to the other lane

and Death's car did the same

then flames lit up the night

God's presence in the firelight

as Death lay there grasping for air

I saw an end to this dark nightmare.

A very intense poem, dark and thrilling. The ride is full of excitement and challenge, who will win this ride. Death is determined not to let it's prey escape but somehow
loses in the end and perhaps death is the victory for the driver of the other car, for the nightmare is over. Very well written. This has the makings of a song, I think it would be a good one too! Thanks for sending this to me so I could read it. :)

This was simple yet so striking. I wish there was more in the middle to elasticize the rush, the fear I had while reading this.

Thanks! I did this poem in 1984 and have improved it since then, I may revise it in the future.
I really liked this, I could picture you with a ghostrider behind you. creepy!!! it does lose a little flow in the middle but it didnt ruin it to be honest!

A powerful poem. You create a strong story in this short poem. I like how you set-up the scene. I like the positive ending. You are lucky if death was coming and he missed you. A excellent poem. Thank you.

Don't want to encounter this car on the High Way. The Grim Reaper coming for me, oh no! Cool and awesome!
