It Gets Better

It Gets Better

A Poem by ericdeben
"

About growing up too fast.

"

I tied a rope around my neck,

Preparing to hang my head.

When my mother walked in

And asked the reasons not to live.

When I told her I was feeling

Under society’s  weather

She told me; “Son,

It gets better.”

So I researched.

How to become an adult in one hour.

But if mother asks me to pay the bills,

I won’t contribute one dollar.

I looked up to my father,

Tried to become a man.

Did what men did to gain confidence,

To always look their best.

I tried to grow a beard like all the older men,

But I only could grow stragglies,

In denial; I refused to shave my chin,

And looked up alternative strategies.

At my high school dances I grinded

With all those pretty s***s.

None of them ever minded

But never let me give a f**k.

I tried to find my wife at the age of 16.

My love life was a failure because I rushed everything.

So I tried to take it slow,

But never found the right girl.

So I decided I could be 21

And drink my father’s beer,

I guess I’ll have a little fun.

My mind quickly drifted away from here.

I didn’t even think,

About the insecurities

That led me to believe

I once lived a life without confidence.

That I needed to grow.

I needed to get older.

I needed to find the point

Where life gets better.

I passed out on the couch,

And decided this wasn’t a good idea.

I’ll just grow up naturally,

Let the other boys squander their years.

And I’ll wait until life gets better,

I’ll fall in love and reveal my ivory teeth.

I’ll just wait until life gets better,

But for now I’ll just be 16.

I tied a rope around my neck,

Preparing to hang my head.

When my mother walked in

And asked the reasons not to live.

When I told her I was feeling

Under society’s  weather

She told me; “Son,

It gets better.”

I'm only a teenager.

It gets better.

When I wrote it, it was to the tune of "The General" by Dispatch with Say Anything's Max Bemis singing esp. in "Property", but I could also think of different/more original variations:

I've always loved "The General" and now reading this poem has made me love it even more. Exquisite work; there's nothing here that I would change. There's such a strong meaning and you got your point across with ease

I really like this poem, and it has a very beautiful message. I love it, and though it could use a little work, it's one of a kind and great

I love "The General" and can kind of see how it was written to that tune. I really enjoyed the poem, it felt really emotional. Something I noticed was that the fourth line always seemed to have the weakest rhyme, but that just may be to my ears
