It Gets BetterA Poem by ericdebenAbout growing up too fast.I tied a rope around my neck, Preparing to hang my head. When my mother walked in And asked the reasons not to live. When I told her I was feeling Under society’s weather She told me; “Son, It gets better.” So I researched. How to become an adult in one hour. But if mother asks me to pay the bills, I won’t contribute one dollar. I looked up to my father, Tried to become a man. Did what men did to gain confidence, To always look their best. I tried to grow a beard like all the older men, But I only could grow stragglies, In denial; I refused to shave my chin, And looked up alternative strategies. At my high school dances I grinded With all those pretty s***s. None of them ever minded But never let me give a f**k. I tried to find my wife at the age of 16. My love life was a failure because I rushed everything. So I tried to take it slow, But never found the right girl. So I decided I could be 21 And drink my father’s beer, I guess I’ll have a little fun. My mind quickly drifted away from here. I didn’t even think, About the insecurities That led me to believe I once lived a life without confidence. That I needed to grow. I needed to get older. I needed to find the point Where life gets better. I passed out on the couch, And decided this wasn’t a good idea. I’ll just grow up naturally, Let the other boys squander their years. And I’ll wait until life gets better, I’ll fall in love and reveal my ivory teeth. I’ll just wait until life gets better, But for now I’ll just be 16. I tied a rope around my neck, Preparing to hang my head. When my mother walked in And asked the reasons not to live. When I told her I was feeling Under society’s weather She told me; “Son, It gets better.” I'm only a teenager. It gets better. © 2011 ericdebenAuthor's Note
