A Birthday

A Birthday

A Poem by Erica Wilkinson

You're getting older.
Me too.
So is my mother and
The man who lives on the side of the road
By the corner shop.

I deplore myself
(or the 'myself'
I deemed myself to be)
You know, this does not denote
That I love you any less.

Somewhere, a new born baby
Is screaming. Singing
It's first morning song
To the paradise of a new mother.
I know you love your mother.

I envy you
But I pity you all the same.
You are the farthest thing away
From who I have ever
Wanted to be.

Happy birthday.
