Chapter 1: Andy

5 years had passed since that horrible day in April. Nora was 18, Andy was 15, and Blake was 10. Their parents still hadn’t been sentenced but since Andy had grown wiser, he knew that they wouldn’t see them again. Andy was full of resentment, for their parents left them alone and afraid. Blake doesn’t even remember what they look like anymore.

From the hallway, Nora yelled, “Andy, come one Blake and I are ready to go.” Andy rolled his eyes and said, “Nora give me a break! What’s the rush? I’ll be ready in a few minutes.” Since Nora was 18, she was granted custody of Andy and Blake but Andy was full of anger. For the past 5 years, he had wished to see his parents come in and rescue him. He wished that his parents weren’t really the criminals everybody feared but they were. Andy slammed the dresser shut and sat on his bed. This home was all he knew, for he’d been trapped here for the past 5 years and had barely been in the real word. He had no real friends and had never been to a real middle or high school. What if the kids at school find out about his parents? Deep in thought, Blake emerged from the hall.

Blake said, “Andy, Nora is having a fit. Are you almost ready to go?”

Andy let out a deep breath and said, “Blake, tell her I’m coming.” Blake left the room annoyed and left Andy alone. Andy took one last look and followed the sound of Nora’s screeching voice.

Finally satisfied, Nora said, “Are you guys ready?” Blake and Andy both looked around glumly and nodded their heads.

With concern in her voice, Nora said, “Guys, I promise the real world is much better than this home. Life is going to be so much better once we have a place to call our own. Never again, will we have to worry about being taken away. We’re finally going to have a real home again.”

A smile spread across Blake’s face and he said, “Nora, I don’t remember what a real home is like.”

Nora said happily, “You’ll never have to worry about that again Blake.”
