My Church Balloon Dream

My Church Balloon Dream

A Story by Ryan Luse

My Dream Last Night....

Maybe it was because of the mystical, blissed out weekend I had or maybe my mind is slowly going a little Andy Warhol on me… but last night I had one of those dreams that was more like an event for me, this is what I remember:
For whatever reason, I was in Indonesia in search of something important. The dream didn't really come into focus until I was at an entrance of a large, beautiful church that reached and tickled the clouds.

Outside this church there was wind chimes and shamans, music playing and artists of all kinds that had elongated hands and necks with blue eyes that glowed like those laser pens we had in high school.

With me were my family, friends, my girlfriend and all of my ex lovers. A giant man about 10 feet tall with a perma-grin and dangling keys all over his vest, approaches me with a handful of balloons. He tells me each balloon signifies every woman I have loved in all of my lifetimes.

I don't know how many balloons he gave me but it was quite a handful, all different colors, sizes and shapes. He tells me I cannot enter the church until I release some of the balloons because there is a maximum limit I can bring into "the novel of life."  The sky now has changed a reddish color and music is coming from the clouds. It's a sound unlike any other, kind of like an eastern classic rock set to a symphony of violins.

With some sadness in my heart, I release all the balloons except three and the giant man with keys says I may enter the church now.
Inside it is insane. There are bluebirds flying everywhere, and bonfires scattered about with congregations divided by what you believe with people of all facets and races. I stroll alone for a while and even light a cigarette. I go and sit by a waterfall (ye this church had waterfalls) and listen to a man speak about the soul and morality. It was around this time I notice I only have two balloons. The third is now floating upward towards this never ending church ceiling, I think of ways to get it back but decide to journey on.

I start recognizing more people now, and have a loving urge to find my friends and family. Along side me now are rows and rows of mirrors. Every mirror I peer into I am a different age with a different expression. The more I walk the more I realize how lost I am, and during this confusion I accidentally pop the second to the last balloon. This makes me sad as I leave the shattered balloon behind on the ground.

Two mysterious figures than approach me one calls himself  "Henry" the other is an old lady in all white who is nameless. They tell me they have been along side me this whole time. I tell them I want to see my family, friends and the girl I love. Henry smiles and begins singing. Suddenly everyone in the church begins singing along to. The tones and lyrics vary and it is all in this layered harmony.

I am starting to experience great joy and join in this church singing jam the verse I sing is "The Novel of Life Protects Me." I am still holding the last balloon and think about what would happen if I let it go but hold on to it tightly. I see my family walk out of the church and some of my friends, but most stay and keep singing. I stand there singing, pondering my next move and look up one last time.
I than wake up with a jolt.

I tried to write down as much as I could remember, and I know there are parts that I probably forgot. I think I know what some of it means but am in no way a dream expert, and would love to hear an interpretation or two.

All I know that it twas one lucid, epic, beautiful and intense dream that made me want to sing and share it. –Ryan Luse
