Eyes Wide ShutA Poem by Emily QuinnWith eyes of compassion; gleaming spheres of anonymity withheld I see the bird perch upon the dusted sill Through glass fogged to mirror my vision Eyes stitched shut with the thread of corruption And glinting needle of manipulation Petals mark a path through settling earth, Spotted crimson blood upon stone Warm with odium as wind echoes lies Born from wetted lips curled to a snarl Drip, drip scarlet drops from unjust wounds Words cut bone and mould the mind Slurs plunged deep, fatally cold Why degradation seized control Through maze of insanity snaking the globe Blindly follow loose petals astray Birds eye watching with a marbled stare Cocked head turning with a robotic sneer An eerie caw makes no sound but pierces through the toughest veneer Within humanities shrieks of anguish Pregnant sorrow swells beneath the breast When choked upon the stone of silence, Hushed weeping trembles Earth with death Abhorrence taints soil slick with poison Beak bound shut with the flowers stem, the Protea plant At the end a light of hue that tears the thread binding my eyes Colour returns all is clear, wings spread wide And grass grows over the burgundy blood… © 2010 Emily QuinnAuthor's Note
