Sweet Birthday WishesA Story by Emunah June.Poke. Poke poke.
Ayumi grunted in her sleep, refusing to open her eyes, ignoring the finger prodding her cheek.
Poke poke. Poke poke. Poke poke poke.
She screwed her eyes tighter and tossed over violently. "Nuuuu" she mumbled, voicing her displeasure in being woken so early.
"Ayumi, c'mon get up!"
She didn't feel like arguing, so she slowly dragged herself upward and rubbed her eyes. "Whaaaat?" she mumbled, her lips dry and her hair a mess.
Her friend and roomate, Koda, sighed. "I'm sorry for waking you, but we have a lot of work to do." She stood up and walked over to the window, gently pushing the curtains apart and letting the sunshine pour in.
It was a beautiful June morning, with puffy clouds dotting the horizons and the grass sleek and dewy from the night's rain. Koda smiled. Good. It was perfect weather. She turned around, beginning to say something, but Ayumi was already burrowed back into the covers, swallowed whole. Koda grunted. "I really am sorry for waking you. I'm just as tired as you are, but theres work to be done."
Ayumi grunted under the covers, which only agrivated Koda more. "Ayumi..."
Ayumi hated it when Koda took on that tone. It was a mixture between an annoyed older sister and cross mother, a tone that meant "do what I say and make it quick". Ayumi had never actually seen Koda punish anyone (or raise her voice for that matter) but the thought scared her, so she just instinctively listened. She sat up straight and sighed. "Koda, but its--" she began.
"I'll meet you downstairs. Now hurry. Breakfast is going to get cold."
As Koda left the room, Ayumi sighed, sadly finishing her sentence.
"But its...my birthday..."

Ayumi trudged downstairs, her eyes heavy and her nightgown slipping off her small shoulders. She yawned and turned the corner, where the table was set with a not-so-special breakfast and the house looked normal as usual. Koda was standing near the front door, looking out the window with a blank expression.
"Koda?" "Oh! Ayumi! You're down here."
She walked over to the table. "Ready to eat?" she asked, handing her a fork.
Ayumi grunted, then looked up at Koda with her eyes hopeful. "Do you know what today is?"
"Hmm?" "Today. Do you know what today is?"
Koda smiled. "Of course! It's Thursday, silly." Ayumi's heart sank. "Oh...right. Thanks."
"No problem!" Koda said as she walked over and sat at the table. "Now, make sure you wear something comfortable. We've got at least five deliveries to make before coming home and tending the garden. Oh! Preferably something you dont mind getting stained." Koda yawned. "Okay?"
"Y-Yeah...okay." "Great!"

The day dragged by, and as Ayumi went on all these deliveries and did the household chores, she couldn't help but feel forgotten. Had no one remembered today was her birthday? All day she kept prodding Koda to remember.
"Is today special?" she had asked. "Uh...why would it be special?" Koda asked in reply. "Think about it." "Uhm..." Ayumi gave up. "Nevermind."
Later on in the day, the pair had come across Edward, a friend of them both. They had stopped by his house to deliver some AutoMail parts, as promised. Before leaving, Ayumi turned to Ed with a hopeful look. "Today is special. Do you know why?" she asked.
"Oh yeah," he said, "How can I forget?" She smiled. "Really?!" "Yeah! It's Thursday, the day before Friday!"
She froze.
"I know, it gets me pumped for the weekend too. Glad to see I'm not the only one who gets excited by it." He smiled. "See you later, Ayumi."
She nodded sadly.
On the way home, Koda looked over. "Ayumi, are you alright?" she asked. "You seem kind of down."
Ayumi felt like saying nothing, but she knew it'd be rude. "I just...did you really forget?" she asked, stepping in front their house's front door.
Koda laughed. "Forget what?" Ayumi grit her teeth. "My..." Koda blinked. Ayumi sighed. "Nevermind."
Koda put a hand on her shoulder and the other on the front door. "Ayumi, you've known me for how long?"
No reply.
"Don't you think that it'd be kind of impossible to forget your birthday at this point?"
Ayumi blinked. "Wha?"
Koda pushed on the front door, and the inside of the house was littered with glitter on the floor and banners on the ceiling. Streamers hung low and proud, and as Ayumi walked into the house wide-eyed, a few other people surrounded the table.
"Heey, she's here!" "Awesome!" "Happy Birthday Ayumi!"
Ayumi blushed. "And I thought you forgot!" she said, hugging Koda around the waist.
Koda pat her head. "How could I?"
Edward and Alphonse sat at the table, smiling. "Hey you!" Ed said, "I didnt forget either!"
"And how could I?" Alphonse, her boyfriend, said as he came over and kissed her cheek. "I got you something," he said, handing her a wrapped gift, placing it in her tiny hands.
Koda and Edward did the same, each holding up a gift of their own.
"I baked you a cake, would you like some?" Alphonse asked, and
Ayumi blushed. "Ah...of course!" © 2012 Emunah June.Author's Note
