Chapter 04 || A QuestionA Chapter by Emunah June.Point of View: Koda
"What are you thinkin'?"
I turn my head to the side, where I see Ed staring back at me, his head propped up in his hand.
I yawn. We were laying in bed, taking a much deserved nap after a morning of wrestling with Anna-Lee to get ready for daycare. Ed had the day off, so he decided to stay with me.
"Just um...y'know, the usual."
He nods, then lets his head fall onto the pillow underneath him, his hair undone and his eyes bright. "You're always thinking about the usual, Koda. Tell me something new...something I didn't know about you."
I laugh. "We've been married for nine years, Ed. You know everything there is to know."
"Do I?" he asks, wrapping his arms around my waist under the covers and brings me close to him. I smile. "I think so. I tell you all my secrets."
"All of them?" "Yes, Ed. All of them."
He laughs, and I put a hand to his cheek. He takes my hand in his and smiles at me. "Isn't there anything you can tell me?"
I shrug, bringing the covers up to my shoulder with my free hand. "Um...well, when I was a little girl I went bowling with my family and--"
He sits up and lets my hand go. "Heard it."
"Have you?" "Twice." He grins. "Oh...oops."
Ed laughs as I sit up too. "It's fine. I don't mind it. In fact, it's one of my favourite stories."
I smile as he leans towards me and kisses my forehead.
Being married this long, it's hard to remember what I say and when. I try to keep my words fresh and new, but it gets hard after awhile.
I blush as he puts his hand on my neck and runs his fingers through my hair. "Ahh Koda, I've got a question for you." I look back at him. "What?"
He suddenly becomes serious, grabbing his glasses from the side of the bed and clearing his throat. "You know how I've been job hunting for Al, right?" he asked, and I nod.
It was true. When Alphonse first told Edward about his job and what it was like, it bothered him to no end. He spent many afternoons staring at his reflection in his coffee cup, wondering what to do. Finally, he decided he would look for a job that Alphonse would like better, with better pay at that. I tried to talk him out of it, but he didn't listen. "I have to Koda," he'd say as he'd kiss my lips to stop me from talking. "Al needs it."
He stretches his legs out and sighs. "Well I think I may have just found the one. You see, this one pays by the hour rather than by every two, and the employer seemed nice--"
I stop him. "Ed, look, Lucy seemed nice too remember? Alphonse came back with a belly full of coffee biscuits and water. He talked non-stop about how excited he was for the job, and now look at him. He's miserable."
He frowns, and to make up for it I put my head on his shoulder. "I just want you to think this through, hun. I don't want you to take Al from Point A and put him in Point B if it's worse for him."
Edward sighs. "I know, but listen! This place has a great heating system, and it's naturally cool in the summers. Promotions are easier to get, and it's not so...boring. In fact, it's rather exciting."
Curiosity gets the better of me. "What job is this?"
He smiles. "Glad you asked. It's a job teaching Math at the university."
I gasp. "Ed, are you serious!?" I ask. "That's amazing! He'd love it there!"
Edward smiles, glad to get my approval. "I know he would. I asked if they have any positions open, and they said they would in a few months. I told them to keep me updated, and if the position isn't filled by then, they'll give it to Alphonse no questions asked."
I kiss him, quietly and without warning. This man...the one I married...he was kind, and I liked that.
He put his arm around my waist and smiled against my lips. He pulled back. "Wow. I didn't know you liked that job so much." He laughs.
I laugh and bring his arm around me again. "Its not the job, Ed. It's you. You're so kind to him...he's lucky to have you for a brother."
Edward smiles and waves it off, like he already knew Alphonse was lucky. He looks towards me. "I'm luckier to have him to look out for."
I blush. "And me?" "And you." He kisses the top of my head. "And Anna-Lee."
I freeze suddenly. "Speaking of Anna-Lee...do you think we'll ever tell her? About..."
He kisses me to stop me from talking. He doesn't want to talk about it now, so I simply lean into the kiss and give an inward sigh.
For now, I'll just be grateful this job hunt has come to an end. © 2012 Emunah June. |
