Chapter 44: Conversing With the KingA Chapter by Emunah June. The next minute, I'm outside a great castle.
Anaise is standing next to me, holding my hand. I look down and examine myself. I'm back to the fancy tuxedo I had been wearing all this time, and not a single dollop of blood was to be seen. I felt no pain, only joy and happiness. I was excited to see this king, to meet him and to talk with him.
There is a gate outside the castle. I stare at the guard in front. His eyes are a light and beautiful green colour, and his smile is warm. He's got short, beautiful blonde hair, and a small name tag reading "Peter" on the front.
Anaise drags me towards him. "C'mon, thats the king guard! He only lets in the best of the best!" she said, smiling. I take her hand and walk forward. Peter sees me and smiles. "Hello there, young traveler!" he says, then looks me up and down. "Ooh, so very young. What is someone like you doing here?" he asks. I shrug. "I was asked to come. Anaise said so," I said, looking down at her.
Peter smiles. "Ahh yes, Anaise. What a sweet girl. I was surprised the king called her here so early. But what can ya do? The king knows what hes doing," he says as he pulls out a notepad from his pocket. "Name?" he asks. I sigh. "Alphonse Elric," I say. He skims his paper and circles something with his pen. "Ah! Here you are! Alphonse Elric!" he said, overjoyed. I saw a smile on Anaise's face as he opened the gate and let me in. "The king is expecting you," he says.
Anaise pulls me in and watches in wonder as Peter shuts the gate. I smile. "Anaise," I begin, "This place is nice. You live here?" I ask. She nods. "Mmhmm. I was born here, and the king has raised me!"
I grunt. She didnt know who her real parents were. That made me sad. If only she knew of the mother and father she missed out on.
"No no, she knows."
My eyes widen at the melodious yet booming voice coming from the room Anaise and I had wandered into. Anaise smiles. "Yes yes, I know about Mama and Papa! I know, I know!"
I look ahead of me and see a glimmering throne, with light so bright I must cover my eyes. The sight is too glourious for words.
"Your Highness!" Anaise says with a smile, "He's arrived! Uncle Alphonse is here!"
"I can see this, Anaise. Thank you for bringing him here to Me."
I suddenly understand who I am standing before, and where this place is: Heaven. I'm in Heaven. Everything that had been happening now made sense.
-Everyone at the ball depicted angels. Koda was there only because I had, in a sense, worshipped her and believed her to be an angel. She was a false image.
-Me chasing her when she demanded was me being lead into temptation. And I fell for it all.
-Brother on the horse signaled what was to come: God's way of letting me know of the actions I would soon act upon.
-Anaise was an actual Angel: she knew I was going to die and told me me of the King I would soon meet.
-Peter, as in Saint Peter.
It all made sense.
"Of course it makes sense, Alphonse. After all, it was My plan for you."
I fall to my knees. "My Lord, I--"
"Now now, Alphonse. You may arise. I brought you here for a reason."
I stand up and look at Anaise, who pulls a halo out from her pocket and shakes it until it starts to glow. "My Lord, I'm sorry. I didn't know what I was--"
"Alphonse, you have made some costly mistakes, and I have seen them all. But each time you have asked to be forgiven, and I can see your heart. I know you haven't meant what you have done. I have forgiven you, Alphonse. All is well between you and I."
I smile. "Thank You, Lord. Truly, thank You."
Anaise smiles and jumps up and down. "Tell him the news, King! Tell him the news!!"
I feel my heart race. "My Lord, what is the news Anaise is talking about?"
"Patience, My child. All will be revealed in due time. Now, I have something to show you. Pay your best attention."
A mirror places itself in front of me. Suddenly, the moment at Brother's wedding where I had sat in jealously appeared.
"Here you are, envying your brother for marrying who he did. This was not good, Alphonse. Harboring such an indecent feeling is a sin. You're aware of this, aren't you?"
"Yes, my Lord. I am aware."
The mirror flashes to the scene where Ayumi hit me with her car and my body crumples to the ground. I cringe at the image.
"Here is when I blessed you with the most precious gift of all."
I stare as much as I can at the illuminated throne. "Lord?" I ask, "How is it that getting run over by a car is a blessing?"
"My child, do you not pay attention? The blessing was not the incident, but the one who caused it."
The mirror fastforwards the scene to when Ayumi jumps out the car and grabs her cell phone. She's panicked. I can see the fear in her eyes like a lit flame.
Anaise smiles. "Do you get it now, Uncle?"
I shake my head.
"My son, I have tried many times to make it clear to you."
The light brightens, and the mirror reveals the time in the hospital, where I stepped out Koda's room after the miscarriage and cried in Ayumi's arms. She hadn't asked questions, simply hugged me back and let me cry myself out. Then the mirror shows when she kissed my cheek, and how I had reacted. Then it showed when I had kissed her, with no real rhyme or reason.
And she closed her eyes almost immedietly.
I blush. Anaise smiles as she pops the halo on her head. Its suspended in the air. "Uncle Alphonse do you get it now?" she asks. I take a moment and review the images placed before me. Then, slowly, I nod. "I...I think I do."
"I see it in your soul. You do. Now go, My child. I have given you a second chance. Go and live the life I have set before you."
Suddenly, a door behind the throne opens and everyone who have been in my dreams come out. Koda, Brother, the ballmaids...everyone. They place their hands on me.
"Come back home, Alphonse," Koda says. "Ya need to wake up," Brother agrees. "Go Uncle Alphonse!!" Anaise says, jumping up and down.
Slowly, I feel myself falling backwards. My clothes become tattered and bloody, and I feel myself losing strength. My eyes feel heavy. The wind is rushing past my ears as I fall through the clouds and into the city below me. I see I'm headed straight for the hospital, and I can hear sobbing in my ears. I close my eyes, and soon I feel myself hit my body.
My eyes open, even though it hurts. © 2011 Emunah June.Author's Note
