Chapter 24: Brother's Strange Ideas, Koda's Crazy NotionA Chapter by Emunah June.Oh good Lord Ed. XDI stare, not sure how to respond.
Ayumi smiles. "You're coming home today? Great! Sorry I couldn't come, my car was acting buggy. B-But it's okay! Kaen and I are almost done fixing it!" she said with an impossibly cute grin. I blush.
Brother walks over to the hedge and leans forward. "Ayumi, how come you never told us that you were Al's neighbor?" he asked, a suspicious look on his face. It comes across to Ayumi as either creepy or intimidating, so she stumbles on her answer. "Well, I didn't KNOW he was my neighbor. I don't really pay attention to who I live around."
At this, Brother stands up straight and glances over at me. "Well now, that's stupid," he replies as he comes over and pats my shoulder. "What if Al was a demented rapist or something? Then how would you feel when he sneaks into your house and brutally ra--"
Koda comes over and slams her palm around his mouth. She gives Ayumi a worried look. "Eh heh, ignore him, he has a wild imagination...right dear?" she said, looking up at him angrilly. I blush. Now I can't look Ayumi in the eyes without thinking of what Brother said.
Koda removes her hand and Brother nods. "Well I was just saying..." he whispers at Koda, and when she crosses her arms over her chest he stops talking.
"S-So Ayumi! D-Do ya think this means we can hang out more?" I ask, and she nods brightly. "Yeah! I'd sure love that! After all, we did promise we'd be friends, didn't we?"
When she says this, I flash back to the moment where she came to shake my hand but tripped, and our lips brushed past each other. I blush. Oh my, now why did I think of that?
"Alphonse, it's rude not to answer a girl."
Koda's talking pulls me back into reality. "Oh uh...yeah we did, didn't we?" I reply quietly, bringing my fingers to my lips and gently rubbing them. Ayumi sees this, begins to blush, and turns around. "R-Right well, I'll be around. I'd better get back to fixing the car. Kaen'll throw a fit if I'm not over there soon," she says. Before I have time to say okay, she's gone, and I'm left standing by the hedge alone.
Brother sighs. "Well, guess you won't be getting rid of her any time soon, eh?" he asked, and I look over at him. "Wh-Why would I want to get rid of her? She's a nice person, and I want to be her friend."
Koda looks over at me, and a strange smile graces her face. I stare for a moment, unsure of what she's doing.
Then it hits me.
"You think I like her, don't you?!" I ask, blushig madly and pointing at Koda. Koda laughs and shrugs. "What? Whatever gave you that idea?" she asks in a fake accent. Brother looks over at her, and soon he's wearing the same smile she is. "Well, now that I think about it, I HAVE seen some undeniable chemisty between the two of you.." he begins.
I blush again.
"N-No! You have it wrong!! She's my friend! Thats all!!" I say frantically, waving my hands back and forth in front of me. Brother and Koda shrug at the same time, and both of them say "Sure Al." I sigh dramatically.
They're starting to mimic the other now? Good grief. How cliche.
"Trust me Al, I know true love when I see it," he says, first patting my shoulder then going over to Koda and snuggling his face against hers. She gives off that perfect giggle of hers, and I simply turn my head in frustration.
Do you HAVE to do that here?? Good grief.
Brother seems to read my mind. He wraps his arms around Koda from behind, who's face is a bright shade of crimson. "Al, Koda and I are going to..uh...hit the road for awhile. We'll be back later...much, much later," he says, whispering in Koda's ear. She blushes and laughs, and I pinch the bridge of my nose. "Okay then, see you later!" I say as I dash into my apartment and slam the door shut.
Dear God, why have you teased me with such a beautiful girl, only to have her married to the person whom I despise most?
I look up the ceiling, wondering what to do next.
Maybe I'm wrong...maybe Koda's not who I want.... No, wait. If that was true, you would have brought someone even more beautiful into my life.
I sigh and slink onto the sofa. I think of Ayumi, and I don't know why. © 2011 Emunah June.Author's Note
