Chapter 8: Last Morning, Good NightA Chapter by Emunah June. Its a masquerade ball.
I'm standing in the centre of the festivites. Women around me are dancing, each graceful and aware of my presence. Their faces are covered with masks lined in gold, silver, jade, and feathers. Their dresses look expensive. I wonder if I'm in the right place...
"Alphonse."
A woman waltzs over to me and sinks into my arms. Almost as if on cue, I begin to twirl her around. Something about this feels wrong. Like I shouldn't be doing this. "Who are you?" I ask, but she doesn't say anything.
Our dance continues.
"Tell me, Alphonse," she speaks as I slide my arms around her waist. Her lips are full and pursed, and my heart skips. Without meaning to, I lean forward and kiss her. She stands still.
I stand still.
"Alphonse, do you know who I am?" "No." "Are you attracted to me?" "Yes."
She slips her fingers along my chin and waltzs away, daring me to follow her. I attempt, but the other women dance in front of me, and I lose sight of her.
The dancers part, and I look all around for her. She's standing outside, waving to me.
I run. In slow motion.
I get to her and immedietly take her in my arms. She fingers my lips, but when I reach in for a kiss, she stops me.
"Alphonse, take off my mask." "Wh-What?" "Don't you want to know who I am?" "I...yes but no..." "Yes but no?" "It'll ruin the mystery."
The woman laughs as she fingers my chin again. "You're so sweet, Alphonse. It's a shame I didn't marry you now isn't it?"
With that, she pulls off her mask to reveal Koda. I blush, remembering the kiss I had given her earlier.
She walks back into the dance hall. "Follow me if you want me."
