Chapter 5: ReturnA Chapter by Emunah June.I didnt know how to react to Ayumi's presence at first.
Part of me was angry with her for running me over. After all, how can one get over that? It's kind of a hard thing to get over. However, another part of me was curious and wanted to get to know her better. She was pretty, I could give her that much.
That day, I sat back against my bedpost as Brother and Ayumi got me whatever I needed. Eventually, Koda came and sat with me too, her big blue eyes full of concern and worry. Ed filled her in. With each word he spoke of the accident, Ayumi lowered her head in shame. I smirked. Good. She should feel sorry for what she did.
But Koda wasnt as spiteful. Instead, she took on the tone of an irritated mother. "Texting while driving isn't such a good idea. next time, keep your cell phone in your pocket. It'll be better that way."
Ayumi didn't speak, she simply looked at Koda's buldging stomach, bursting with an unborn life. After a second, she mumbled a faint "Yessm," and went back to staring sadly at me.
I couldn't help but stare back at her. She was beautiful, that was for sure. And guilty. You could tell. But whenever I started to say something to her, I remember the car slamming against my ribs and I get angry all over again. So I bite my lip and say nothing.
Nothing at all.
"Alphonse?" Brother calls. I look up, and he's smiling tiredly. I quickly check the time. Ten-thirty. "Koda and I are heading home. We'll be back to check on you in the morning," he said a second later. I nod, a swift feeling of exaustion washing over me. He nods back, and goes to hug me, but stops because he remembers why I'm here in the first place. I look back.
"What about you?"
I look at Ayumi, who jumps when she realizes I'm talking to her. "I, uh, I'm staying for a bit longer. Kaen wont mind," she says in a low voice. I almost don't hear her.
But I do.
Brother gathers up his things, then gently joins hands with Koda. I look at their hands. Rings. Both of them. Rings.
So he really did get married. I wasn't dreaming.
"Sleep tight, Al," Koda says just before the door shuts, leaving Ayumi and I alone. I swallow, then look at her. She's staring at me again, almost as if she's trying to tell me something.
But if she is, I can't hear her.
"Ayumi, do you live around here?" I ask. She looks up, her eyes swirling excitedly. She must be glad she's allowed to talk. I understand know what she was trying to tell me.
Do I have your permission to speak?
"I do. My brother and I live in an apartment not too far from here."
I nod, saying "Oh," and looking out the hospital window. The sun has long since went to bed for the evening, leaving me to wallow in this awkward silence. She looks at me, opens her mouth to speak, but stops halfway.
"Ayumi?" "Y-Yes, Alphonse sir?" "Call your brother." "No. I want to ask him if you can stay here for the night." © 2011 Emunah June.Reviews
