Chapter TwoA Chapter by Emunah June."The rain never seems to let up, does it Nii-San?" Alphonse asked the following morning. Edward looked outside the window to see that the rain had in fact picked up. The inn was obviously too old for it's own good, as the cold rainy winds were seeping in and chilling Edward to the bone--even with the two blankets spread across his waist. "Looks like we aren't going anywhere today," Edward proclaimed, laying back down on his pillow. Alphonse cocked his helmet in a curious position. "Are you sure? I mean, we've walked through worse...." Alphonse began, but Edward was beginning to tune him out, just like he always did when Alphonse started nagging him. Before Edward could do anything else, there was a knock on the door. "Come in, " Alphonse warmingly invited, and Edward watched as the inn owner, Miharu, walked in with a tray of tea and toast. Her older sister, (whom she refered to as Onee-Chan) Michiro, stood by with a tired but helpful expression on her face. "Good morning, gentlemen, are you hungry?" Miharu asked. Edward looked at the piping hot tray, then to his brother, who was probably wishing he had the ability to eat. "Um...sure. Thank you Miss Miharu," Edward said as he stood up and kindly accepted the tray. Michiro took in a small amount of breath. "Um, sir, would you like anything else?" she timidly asked. If Edward hadn't known any better, he would have assumed she was flirting with him. But he had seen the wedding ring on her finger, so he knew. "A newspaper for Alphonse, please," Edwar annouced, and Michiro shyly nodded and left the room with her sister.
The rain pitter-pattered against the room's single window, and that's when Alphonse spoke.
"We've been through alot, haven't we Nii-San?" Alphonse asked. Edward sat back down on the bed, still holding the tray. He didn't have to move his arm to feel the heavy presence of his AutoMail arm. "We sure have," he answered blankly, grabbing ahold of one of the teacups and taking a big sip. The tea felt good as it made it's way down his throat, but for some reason, it wasn't as pleasureable as normal. Maybe it was because of all he had been thinking about lately. Alphonse stood up, his large metal body shaking the entire room as he stood. He walked over to the window, watching the rain fall and wash the earth clean. As Edward set down his tea and started on his toast, his mind flashed back to the night he tried to bring his mother back.
The look on Alphonse's face was horrific.
He was screaming, begging, and pleading for Edward to save him as dark black arms sucked him into a dark abyss. Edward reached out to him, screaming his name, but he was too late, and soon Alphonse disenigrated into nothing. He would never forget how loud Alphonse had shouted, and how fast his heart beat against his ribs as he hopelessly attempted to rescue his brother.
But that wasn't the biggest thing on his mind.
He was mainly thinking about his abducted first crush, about where she may be now, and that was even if she was alive. Edward bit into the toast, but he didn't even taste it as he chewed. It felt as if he was chewing a big ball of rubber. "Nii-San...are you feeling okay? You don't look so good," Alphonse asked. Edward had barely heard him, due to how bad he was spacing out. Feeling more active than a couple minutes ago, Edward grabbed a ponytail from his bedside and began to braid his golden blonde hair. "I'm fine, just a little tired is all," Edward answered sluggishly. Before Alphonse could reply, Michiro timidly walked in with a rolled up newspaper tucked between her arm and her ribs. "Um...here is your newspaper, sir," she stated, and as soon as Edward locked his braid in his elastic, he stood up and took it from her. "Thank you, I'll make sure to pay extra for it," he assured. Hastily, Michiro nodded and left the room once again. As Edward handed Alphonse the newspaper and exchanged a quick word of thanks, he dug himself under the blankets and finished up his food.
It was when Alphonse gasped loudly that Edward nearly knocked the teacups over.
"Geex Al, what's your problem?!" Edward shouted, slamming the tray of food down on the beside table beside him. Alphonse only opened the newspaper one of it's middle pages and threw it at Edward. "Nii-San! Look!" he shouted. Edward took the newspaper and thumbed to the page Alphonse had given him.
"BREAKING NEWS! LOST CHILD FINALLY FOUND!
Yesterday, around 3:20 PM, military officials found a teenage girl wandering the streets in nothing but a white laced nightgown. She was taken in for questioning, and soon police found that she was the Resemboolian child that was abducted from the front porch of her home around 8 years ago. When abducted, Koda Tucker was around 8 years old, but today she is 15. Miss Tucker is currently in the trauma ward of the Resembool Medical Center, with no visible wounds."
Edward nearly passed out.
Koda?! She was alive?! What a twist of fate! And better yet, he knew her location now! She must look heavenly, Edward thought. "She's...." Alphonse began, but when he saw the smirk spread across his older brother's face, Alphonse knew.
Edward grabbed his coat, pulled on his walking pants, and slipped on his boots.
"Let's go Al. We're off to the hospital." © 2010 Emunah June. |
