Missing Girl

Missing Girl

A Poem by E.J. Michalec

I can’t bear to watch the one I love fall for the girl I fail to recognize
The one that looks longingly at the emergency exit with every passing second
The one who can’t ask for directions because she simply doesn’t speak hope fluently
How did she even get here?
Her passport photo matches the girl in the mirror but ma’am, I’m going to need another form of identification that a pocketbook can’t provide
This girl is missing, but not in a way that can be printed on a milk carton
Loved ones surround around her at the table as they collectively wonder as they gaze into her glossy eyes
Where has she been?
