365A Chapter by Emma Taylor
Psychopath. Noun. A person suffering from chronic mental disorder with abnormal or violent social behavior.
Medically, he is these things. There's a file in some doctor's office that says his name, and under his name it reads, "psychopath." He carries this label with him everywhere he goes. It's not something he can escape, it's not something that can be cured. No pill can create emotions, no therapy can instill feelings, and no amount of surgery or treatment can change a brain that is fundamentally different that the rest of society's. Psychopathy doesn't necessarily mean criminal psychopathy. He isn't a serial killer. He hasn't been convicted of any crimes. He's not a completely horrible, wretched human being. He just feels no empathy. If you saw him walking down the street, you wouldn't think to yourself, "that guy is a psychopath." In fact, if you saw him, you probably wouldn't think twice about him. So the saying that goes something like "you never know what's behind closed doors" applies to him. He doesn't tell anyone he has this chronic mental illness. He blends in with society and refuses to let himself stand out. But he's not like us. He's never felt empathy, He can't relate to the emotions we feel. He is never happy. He is incapable of feeling joy. He knows no compassion. And yet he showed me an inexplicable amount of love. Whether that love was genuine or not still remains a mystery to me. © 2015 Emma Taylor |
