The False Star

The False Star

A Poem by Emma Marie Taylor

Up in the sky, the young boy stared
Sitting with family, the stars they shared

up in the black blanket night
Shone a star, blinking bright

And the boy pointed, "Look, a star, a star!"
But his father said, staring far,

"No one star could shine that bright."
The boy just shook his head with glee, "But look, father! Don't you see?"

He giggled and sang,"Father! Father! Lets give it a name!"
But his father replied, "We can't, my son, tis just a plane."

But as the years went by the boy held that day
No matter what people might think or say

For he knew that shining bulb was not a plane
For a star and plane were not the same

Not a plane could shine so bright
Or twinkle diamonds in the night

So as the boy grew up and ignored the lies
Defying the science behind their eyes

The false reality of myth took over
His child's brain slowly did sober

But as the star dimmed dark and faded away,
He finally obeyed what the people say

And the boy grew up
And ran
from a boy to a man
married with one  girl, another on its way

When they sat outside and
His daughter did say, "Look, a star, a star!"

His daughter beamed
Believing the light was a star, it seemed

The man looked up to see the star
The star he always knew was  far

And shook his head and betrayed the magic, "It is not a star, I know its tragic."

But his daughter smiled and
her neck she craned, "No, daddy! Lets give it a name!"

But he set his jaw and mumbled low, "it is not a star, but just a plane."

His daughter shook her head and smiled,"A star and a plane are not the same."

And the man remembered his years as a child

And grabbing her hand he then stared

Locked in dreams and magic was shared

As they both whispered, eyes afar

"Twas never a plane, but a glistening star."

My favorite line in this poem is:
"And the boy grew up
And ran
from a boy to a man
married with one girl"

Beautiful Emma!! A real treat this poem is today, of all days, lately. The news about what happened today in Connecticut had me at "wit's end", but you bring me to a pleading knee to enjoy ANOTHER one of your poems I kiss my heart with when I need it!! I didn't/don't mean to sound cheesy in any way. I only know a certain way of commenting when I am thinking, and I don't edit anything but spelling errors. What a fun/reflecting poem to read from you. You're gorgeous!! xoxo -Mark

What a beautiful poem. I felt like it had a happy message. To be adult with adult dreams strips away all magic till nothing is left but toil and the ever fleeting reality of time. But a child's wonder, brings back the life and light in their eyes. It reminded me too of that wonder. Thank you! Keep it up, you have great talent. Spoken eloquently and from the heart.
