Shameless Chapter One

I sit with my feet forward, my backpack smashed against my chest. The room is the same as usual. Mr. Finnly isn't one to keep things switching, unorganized. A trait I have always envied, I must say. I've been here for ten minutes. My left arm is asleep and my nervous fingers tug on the frayed strings on the sleeve of my hoodie. I hate this place. Why can't they just leave me alone? I'm sixteen-years-old, i dont need to be babied anymore...well, honestly...I never did. I've learned how to stay on my own. With the Flashes' help of course.

The door opens with a creak from its rusty hinges. Mr. Finnly steps in, clean and sharp in every which way. His hair (or what is left of it) is neatly slicked back, his black pants ironed and pressed, his blue and white striped shirt tucked in, with not even a wrinkle threatening to disturb him. Yup, that's Mr. Finnly alright. "Good morning, Clarabell," he says wearily, sitting down in his black leather desk chair. He folds his hands neatly on the desk and gives me a small smile. "Clare," I correct him for about the three-billionth time. He nods impatiently and looks down at me. "This is your fourth Outing in the past two weeks, Clarabell," Mr. Finnly says, his eyes narrowing. I try to forget the fact that he totally just ignored my request about my name. Classic Mr. Finnly. "Its not my fault nobody wants me, I've gotten the Flashes, why can't I live on my own now?" I ask.

Mr. Finnly shakes his head and taps his foot under the desk, "You know that is against the rules, Clarabell. Unclaimed minors in the Switched program aren't eligible for independence until adopted." I sigh and let my backpack slide off my lap and onto the floor. I've been through this with Mr. Finnly many times before, I might as well not fight it. I know he'll always win. I sigh and look up at him, "So who do we got this week?"
