A fair price to payA Poem by EJ ColemanAll right,
let’s see He gave me
one hundred and fifty bucks That’s
enough for an hour, not for a night It can’t be
my fault he’s so boring I fell asleep But a
thousand should cover that And come to
think of it, let’s add twenty for this smell of milk At least, I
dearly hope it is milk And another
twenty so the wife never learns It isn’t my
fault that my tongue sometimes slips I’ll take
ten for the hangover and not puking on his clothes And let’s
say ten for all the time I spent on him Time I’ll
never get back, because it never comes back Ten dollars
seems a fair price to pay Screw it,
make it fifteen These are
my golden years, I’m at my best age Fifteen
dollars seems a fair price to be spending them on him For that
bruise he gave me; ten dollars That time
he scared me; ten dollars The way I’m
feeling right now; ten dollars One
thousand two hundred and forty five That’s a
month’s rent and a couple of meals But god, it’s
not even I’m only
human, it’s not even Who walks
around with a fiver in his wallet? You can’t
get anything for that One thousand
two hundred and fifty It’s a fair
price to pay, don’t you think? I would say He wears a
suit, he has more It’s a very
fair price, it’s a generous price And I don’t
even like the guy No, it’s a
fair price to pay Don’t you
think? I should
say But just in
case he doesn’t agree, this is when I should probably leave © 2016 EJ Coleman |
