Sad Writes Strongest

Poetry of cheery nature

Sets the heart and soul awhirl,

Weaving light and love across the world,

Deeming life a wholesome pearl.

 

Poetry of nonsense notions

Conjures laughter more and more,

’Til we’re bobbing on the ceiling,

Even rolling on the floor.

 

Yet, though they prove poetic

In their beauty, truth, display,

It’s the poetry of mournful matters

Which bears the stronger sway.

 

For ’tis written with a whimper

And a stab that stings the soul;

’Tis a testament of blood and tears

That reveals an empty hole.

 

And the poets cast in shadow,

As those hopelessly forlorn,

Are the most who would be wide awake

In the wee hours of the morn.

 

Ever watching from their windows

As the world wafts firmly by,

They but write to keep on living,

Or they write to simply die.

I appreciate how you have illuminated the idea of somber writing as being especially powerful. I feel as though one of the more effective ways that you portrayed this is by changing your tone as the poem went from discussing more upbeat poems to the more morose ones but still keeping the same strong beat.
