To The Hay

To The Hay

A Poem by emipoemi

Buddy makes a living out of two-by-fours and nails,

Travels back and forth on bicycle to generate his sales,

But a pothole in a side-street sends him spiraling away-

He’s gone to the hay, to the hay,

He’s gone to the bottom of the hay.

Buddy lies in bed with blots of purple, green, and red,

Has a compress on his coccyx, and a sling around his head.

Calls up all his friends for company, but finds to his dismay

They’ve gone to the hay, to the hay,

They’ve gone to the bottom of the hay.

Brian acts as though a fop with Jenny at his side,

Charlie opens up a window shop to polish up his pride,

While Nelly does a belly-flop, and ripples Thunder Bay-

She’s gone to the hay, to the hay,

She’s gone to the bottom of the hay.

Desmond takes his barrow to the market place one day,

Finds he’s fined a fee that’s worth his eye, ’cause Duncan didn’t pay,

And in Duncan finds no solace, ’cause his horses wouldn’t neigh-

He’s gone to the hay, to the hay,

He’s gone to the bottom of the hay.

Nina meets with Nani on the day of Nene’s birth,

Says they must plan something special so he’ll know how much he’s worth.

And both with love collaborate while Nene goes astray-

He’s gone to the hay, to the hay,

He’s gone to the bottom of the hay.

-

Charlie coats the walls with paint, and varnishes the floor,

Gathers up his finest specimens, and puts them to the fore,

But all is shortly shattered by some rowdy kids at play-

He’s gone to the hay, to the hay,

He’s gone to the bottom of the hay.

Desmond punches Duncan to upbraid him for his wrong,

Duncan wrestles Desmond out the door, and bowls him through a throng.

Then saddles up his horses, and goes fiercely on his way-

He’s gone to the hay, to the hay,

He’s gone to the bottom of the hay.

Brian, growing rather gloaty, spits in people’s eye,

Although Jenny has her petticoatie, Jenny’s seldom dry,

And Nelly from her belly-flop winds up in Yalong Bay-

She’s gone to hay, to the hay,

She’s gone to the bottom of the hay.

Nina buys the decorations, Nani buys the cake,

Ev’rything is seasoned with the love they breathe in Nene’s wake,

But Nina has a meltdown when she finds out Nene’s gay-

She’s gone to the hay, to the hay,

She’s gone to the bottom of the hay.

So Buddy has nobody who could come to ease his pain

While he lies in bed with mottled blots, his senses on the wane.

With church bells in the distance as the world turns black and grey-

He’s gone to the hay, to the hay,

He’s gone to the bottom of the hay.

To the hay, to the hay,

They’ve gone to the bottom of the hay.
