Smoke Grilled SausageA Chapter by emilythestrange" Are you sure you'll be alright? " Lydia said, trying to smooth down my frizzy hair but her hands just slipping through my face and making me shiver. " Yes, Lydia, we'll be fine" I said, smiling at her. " And you know where to find people if you get into trouble? " " Yes Lydia" we all chorused " There's an emergency credit card in all your top drawers, just in case" " LYDIA, GO! " .
Lydia, Ward, and all the soldiers in our department had gone on a job, leaving us on our own for the first time. We'd been there three months by that time, and training everyday. We told Lydia we'd train for three hours while she was gone, but we weren't going too.
" Let's order pizza! " Flossie shouted, jumping up from her chair. We all looked at each other. We had the money.
And about three mintues later...
" One smoke grilled sausage, one vegitarian, and one plain cheese, please!" I said, sticking my tongue out at Russel, cause' he wanted smoke grilled sausage and onions, and I don't like onions. He splashed me in the face with some water( but was nice enough to go and get me a towel from the airing cupboard afterwards) . I put the phone down and said, " If we're having pizza, we need to have a party" . " I don't know..." Damien said. "Oh come on" Flossie said, fluttering her dark lashes at him. Her purple eyes glistened in the lamp light, giving her a mysterious, almost goddess-like look. I shot her a look. I knew Flossie -she was the only girl there, so of course I was friends with her- she'd lead Damien on until his dying breath, but never ever even show any genuine interest in him at all. I didn't really like Damien- he was such a teachers pet- but that was mean, even by my standards. She rolled her eyes as Damien relented. "Fine. But we have to clean up by morning, Ward'll have our heads" he said, heading for the door. " Where are you going?" Flossie simpered, pouting. "I'm going to check out Wards taste in music" he said shyly, and Flossie stood up and followed him. I looked at her again, but this time more as a I give up more than anything else. I raised my eyebrows at him and he did the same back, and we both dissolved into peels of laughter. Jake looked at us like we were maniacs(which we were) and said," I'm gonna go help them". We nodded. Just as he left we heard the crackle of the intercom. "Uhh...Hello?" the pizza guy says. "Two seconds, I'll be right down" I said, running to get my card. " Stay here" I said. Russell had a reputation for wondering.
I ran down and payed as fast as possible, handing him the card through the black, iron gates that seperated the real world and us. I smiled at him and he handed the pizza's under the gate. "Have a nice night" he says, tipping his pizza hat and giving me back the card.
I walked back into my room and was hit by the sound of Paramore playing We Are Broken full blast. "Pizza's here!" I tryed to shout over the noise. Russell was looking through all the CD's and pushed the seat next to him out a couple inches as I sat down. "Apparently Ward is a big Taylor Swift fan" he said, holding up one of many T.Swift CD's. "Put one on" I said, laughing. "Na. Not a big fan myself. Think she sounds nasaly" "Do not insult Taylor Swift, Russell, it will have terrible repercussions" . I opened up our pizza and smiled, breathing in the familiar smell of sausage. "My dad used to get me this pizza when I was little" I said, memories flashing back of unfinished pizza and sausage stains on the carpet. Jake snuck over to the CD player and put Pearl Jam on. "Turn that off" Russell said. "No. Are you gonna make me?" Jake asked, turning it up even louder. Russell stood up, and I shook my head in exasperation. I didn't want to have to break up another fight. Russell raised his fist but didn't let it hit Jake's face because he reached behind him and took the CD out. Jake knew Russell would hit him- and hard. Russell waved the CD at him and walked out of the room backwards. We all followed him. Jake tried to garb the CD as Russell walked out the front door. "I'm going to bury this so no one has to listen to this crap ever again" he said holding the CD in the air. Jake chased him round the garden trying to get the CD back. They stood infront of the gate having a seemingly peaceful conversation. "Come on, man, give the CD back" JAke said. "Take it from me" "Fine" . JAke grabbed at the CD and Russell let go. "Crap" Russell said as the CD rolled through the gates bars and onto the road. He unlocked the gate and stepped out onto the street. " No, Russell, come back" Flossie said worredly. We were as safe as we could possibly be behind that damn gate-going to beyond it meant that Iangiav would have a clear shot. We'd be sitting ducks. Russell stepped out onto the road, looking both ways and picking up the CD. "And now I'm coming back" he said ironically, just as a green Kia came speeding down the street at 70 miles an hour and knocked him down in the middle of the road, the CD rolling down the street and disapearing down a gutter. © 2012 emilythestrangeAuthor's Note
