What Are We

What Are We

A Poem by Emily Sutliff

We are wired to be grateful in hiccups-

When something bad happens, we’re quick to judge,

quick to consider the negative and cling to what we have.

When something good happens,

We become novelists, who want to share our world

With other worlds and writing books about how

amazing life is in that sudden moment.

How clever would we be, how wise, how fearless if instead

Of reaching for a glass of water to make the hiccups go away,

We let them run its course through our body.

I think we have been taught gratefulness as if it is an alarm

Clock, or a car engine, or a faucet- something we turn on

And off.

What if it became a personality trait- a part of us that

We could never hit the switch on.

Because why do we ever turn it off?

The world around us is plagued with ugly-

Yet things still find time to be beautiful, soft,

Glad to exist.

Let’s cling to those. We must.

I love this. It is intelligent writing, refreshing considering a lot of times people write about nothing at all. Good Job!
