Serotonin

Serotonin

A Poem by emily joe

I want to take tar baths

In the pools beneath my eyelids

F*****g black holes

That tell the story

Of how I didn’t sleep last night

Or the night before that

I’ve never really lusted after friends

But there’s this one girl I’ve been dying to know

Wow. I'm a huge fan already... safe to say. I read your bio and I shuttered to think of how eerily it resonated with my own struggles. My freshman year (last year) I almost (close to a fractal hair) resulted in my leaving university as well, due to an implosive/destructive mood disorder(s). When you're an artist, which you undoubtedly are, you take in the world much closer to the core of your being... like a reluctant sponge... and when you add mental illness to the equation, it makes life extremely harrowing. Plus, the academic environment is entirely too elitist and unsupportive of the "avant garde". Throw in the factor of being a FEMALE; and you get a world that seems to disregard & flippantly silence the entirety of our experience.

Well. I get you. I can't even tell you how refreshing it is to read another woman's writing-- like yours-- that is so reflectively honest & artistic. Keep on truckin'. Don't quit. Don't let this patriarchal/corporatist world get you down. Stay a romanticist. You have wonderful talent! :)

ha yea, realness. I picture a mirror and a sigh and a high of last night and in the background there is that voice of reason saying ...damn...get a nap in at least...eat that probiotic yogurt, drink a bit slower, and you'll be A O K...
