Yep, I love southern California, but I'm not too thrilled with LA. In many ways, I like Chicago more. In fact, I don't even think of LA as being a part of the "California Experience". It's just too big, too dirty, too congested. While San Francisco it also congested, it has much more charm. It is a wonderful city. I live in San Diego. It's starting to get a bit congested, too. But not enough yet (at least for me) to cancel on all its benefits. But I agree with Coyote. There are lots of places that epitomize California, such an Monterey, Santa Cruz, etc. The oceans, the mountains, the redwoods, the desert. It's called the golden state for good reason.
I do understand this poem. I was station for three years at Monterey, California. Been 20 years and I still wish to be sitting by the bay. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.
