Different is BeautifulA Story by emilyarta speech I wrote for a conference I attendedWhy do we categorize ourselves? Our desire to fit in is monumental, saturating and overpowering our own voice to direct our every move. Yet its our uniqueness that thrives in our hearts, governing our ideas, true goals and our deepest thoughts. Take a moment and look around at the people next to you (or think about the people in your life). Physically we are separate, differentiated, unique. Maybe some would take those differences and ostracize themselves or others, forcing all who don't fit the mold to be estranged, only accepting those who look the same. But now take a moment and think of our similarities. We all have hopes, dreams, values, a family, secrets. We desire love and connection with other people. I believe that everyone has something to bring to the table: leadership, determination, courage, thoughtfulness. I've seen these qualities in the hearts of many people I've met just this week. Everyone has different skills and talents too: writing, music, dance, a vision. Too often we feel as though we won't reach our goal because of the struggles we have. We may feel unequipped and too rejected to have a chance at success. But somehow, despite how much we are put down, or put into a box or shoved into a narrow-minded stereotypical mold, there is something that keeps pulling us together, putting us back on our feet and bringing our amazing uniqueness into the light. That is the unifying force of love. Some people may say it can't work, groups with such vast differences complementing each other, but right here, right now, we know, Different is Beautiful! © 2014 emilyart |
