A Poem by Elizabeth Mercado
"

inspired by Florence + the machine

"

the drugs are wearing off

but the room is still spinning

catch me, hold me-- baby, you’re winning

mama told me to stay away from boys like you

but i’ll never listen

the tears in your eyes, oh how they glisten

the shards of the mirror

lie broken on the floor

catch a glimpse of the girl i don’t know anymore

my hair is tangled and my eyes are dark

a ghost, a shadow, my spirit shattered

i was someone who once mattered

i wish i had arms to hold you

instead of push you away

my arms, they are so tired and it’s getting late

queen of peace come save me

lead me out the door

it’s hard to dance with the devil, when you’re a prisoner of war

the drugs are wearing off

but the room is still spinning

catch me, hold me-- baby, you’re winning

Seems many are having a hard time coping with their lives as the times continue to beat on their psyche. Personal interactions coupled with continued frustrations and the stress of having to deal anyway bite.

This piece reminded me that we really aren't alone in these days.

love the subtle rhyme in this piece...I almost didn't notice it...I like that because it allows me to focus on content...on the heart and guts of a piece.
My arms fell off a few times trying to hold on to what really wasn't there...I just kept hoping it was.
really like your work, Liz.

it's hard to dance with the devil, when you are a prisoner of war. Addictions, so hard to break.

What an incredibly powerful line that is. I love Florence and the Machine.

The flow of this poem felt very much like a song. Very powerful and evocative in its theme. I really enjoyed reading this. Thanks for sharing your art.
