A Cross

A Cross

A Poem by Elvis Gilley
"

Frail attempt to understand his sacrifice.

"

Early in the morning

Christ awoke convulsing in agony

Teardrops flowed from his soul

For in the depths of his spirit

He knew it was an arrogant world

which condemned him to death

Still, he traveled to the garden

seeking refuge

In the arms of Father God

Jesus wept

Throughout the lonely night

Longing for his Father to comfort him

Even though his friends slept

It was Jesus

darkest hour

Agonizing alone

The worlds sins

draped upon his shoulders

He foreknew

the rage of mankind

Yet he walked even further

in vanity

We condemned an innocent soul

to suffer the wrath of hell

No doubt

grief

Flowed from the seat of compassion

Thoughts

of the cross

filled his mind

He knew our failures

still he traveled

alone

Journeying a hill

named Golgotha

to die for you and I

Having been forsaken

by all men

For their sin

knowing God

Isolated

for the evil he bore upon his back

Slowly he walked

step by step

with his cross

Love

flowing

from his veins

Salvation

the gift

he graciously gave

For the tree

brought

resurrection to all men
