A ThoughtA Poem by EllyA poem with which I think a lot of writers can sympathize. This was written for a poetry slam at my school.I had a thought! I know I did! It was in my grasp Perhaps it hid Up there in the corner, invisible as dust? Oh, where has it gone? I’ll find it- I must! Woe is me! It was right there A thought, floating about in thin air A sentence, aloft on damnably swift wings Good ideas, you know, are such fickle things They tempt, they tease They hover, unseen And watch me suffer They’re just that mean They start fires of inspiration in my head But when I sit down to write, I find they’re all dead And of that flame, all that’s left to remember Is an ugly, useless, sputtering ember And yet… And yet. Ah, thoughts, creations of this brain of mine Gliding lazily out of reach just above You run me ragged for every last line Yet I stay devoted to this funny love For I could never truly tire of the sweetness of the word And so (though I know that such a waste of time is absurd) I will sit here, patiently, for far longer than I ought Awaiting the return of that one elusive thought © 2010 EllyReviews
