Breaking Character

Breaking Character

A Poem by Alana
"

For all the hopeless romantics out there.

"

With bated breath I waited

For a child’s hopeless dream

Wasting every wish I had on deities unseen.

Foolishly believing

That longing brought me flight

Falling is just flying in a way that isn’t right.

The ground came up beneath me

But still I saw the stars

Awed by how they touched me even though they were so far.

The essence of a shell

Affected me so deep

That in my waking hours all I wanted was to sleep.

The luminosity I longed for

May not even exist

A thought at first unsettling but then hard to resist.

Upon the ground I pondered

Falsehoods of flight and light

Then on a whim I closed my eyes and stood shaky but upright.

While the night was beautiful

It left me unfulfilled

So I faced tow’rd the horizon that peeked over sleepy hills.

With feet planted firmly

In the dawn of a new day

Letting out the breath I’d been holding--I knew I’d be okay.

Alana
The last time I posted on Writer's Cafe was 2010. I can't believe it's been four years. I wrote this tonight, my first poem in a long time, and logged on. Well, I had to recover my password first, haha! I'm rusty as heck, but I've been feeling the need for a creative outlet again lately. I hope I've managed to convey myself adequately. :) I hope you enjoyed!

How ironic, I had been gone for about 2 years while I finished my Master's degree and also had to recover my password. I actually haven't written any poems in a long time but post old poems which will always maintain relevance in my life. Enough about me...Beautiful poem. I think it ended perfectly because at first I wasn't sure where the poem was going- "Letting out the breath I'd been holding--I knew I'd be okay." I related to that line but am unsure if it is in the same sense of how it was meant in this poem which led me to reread the poem a few times and try to understand in what way you meant it. The line that really speaks to me though is "Falling is just flying in a way that isn't right." Assuming that line is your original thoughts and words, I think it's a brilliant line. I enjoy poems with words, a flow, and a message that speak to me and yours did that. Thanks for sharing
