I'm Fine

I'm Fine

A Poem by ellie

Her arms cross the ample body

She calls her own.

Her head lowers as they whoop and cachinnate

In the face I hear they call beastly and revolting.

A familiar arm is slung across her meaty shoulder,

The feeling she calls homey.

“Is everything okay beautiful?”

The aged voice was sweet and tender

The tired eyes look her over

Almost protruding through her thought filled mind.

“I'm fine, thanks.”

She pushes down the pain

The proverbial feeling consuming her.

The clock strikes midnight

Her hair windswept by the cold autumn breeze.

One step at a time, peering over the edge.

The gloomy water showing  her distended reflection

Just a couple more steps…

Another step, her toes pendent on the edge

Another step, her body languidly plunging towards the jarring water.

The water absorbing her body

Like the darkness consuming her brain.

Her body sinks like a rock

But her emotions and thoughts

Float to the top spelling out:

“I'm fine.”

Ahhhh, "I'm fine", the universal "no I'm not but sure". I know that feeling well. Brilliant job. :)

Thanks to Inkstain for sending me your way (curious though why, if so impressed as to send me an RR, they didnt review it first ?????)

I didn't take this literally as a suicide but more of a mind 'checking out'. The phrase 'I'm fine' - particularly in the mouth of a woman is a loaded gun I have found but here it is the opening to a fine and very emotional poem.
