Narcissism Cleanses the Soul

Started funny ended with a lovely little life lesson for you all, or maybe its just nonsense, nevertheless, I still like it.

Narcissism cleanses the soul. 

Catch sight of your reflection, 

whisper: I'd swallow me, whole.

Receive admiration with a wink,

with a smug smirk and raised brow

reply: that's exactly what I think.

Always take criticisms on the chin

smile wide and shrug your shoulders,

declare: I think I'm wonderful, so I win.

Nobly pity those that point and taunt,

as truly, their only burdens are themselves;

you're not the ones they haunt.

That is what I call playing with words! You have done it! I believe that what lay behind the depth of poem is nothing but, 'Be Simply Wonderful, Know Your Awesome, Until You Believe In You Nobody Can Hurt It and Just Don't Be Guilty'. I remembered Paulo Coleho as I read this piece. You have put it all beautifully and so that every person has to agree when you read this! Well put poem! One With A Very Deeper Meaning That You Need To Discover Removing the outer cover and as you do so you discover yourself! Wonderful Poem!

Charming, witty, and playful - but there's a lot of wisdom in this, for sure. It may be vain and self-absorbed but in a way these are virtues (at least to the self, and ultimately we are all selfish): confidence and positive mental well-being come from such self-belief. Not that its easily attained, of course. But I do think you can have self-belief without complete vanity... and I could go on... and on.... but I won't.
A very well-crafted, accomplished composition, and intelligently effervescent.

Thankyou so much! I strongly believe some individuals are far too modest and that in exaggerating a vain response can be light hearted and even funny. Laughing with yourself I find helps that selflovin voice. you gotta fully charge that voice with some crazy vanity before you begin to actually hear it over the negativity, that comes from over analysis of ones self, I suppose.

one thing it is is interesting...kind of a reversal of what we would usually think of as narcissistic--simply because we see it as a bad, egotistical thing, but sometimes we need a little of it just to downplay those who will always put us down and kill our self-esteem...confidence is not a bad thing...loving ourselves has to come first before we can love others...

Narcissism can reply be a bad thing because its all about self. But its good to have self confidence so you put a twist on this piece to make me ponder, which is good in a poem.

Quite an interesting take on narcissism. Narcissism is thought to be a bad thing, but your piece deems it a defense mechanism that all should employ. I prefer to think of that as self-confidence, but your way works too. A very quirky write, but there is absolutely nothing wrong with quirky in the poetry world. Very nicely done. take care...dan
