*Gun shot*

I stopped running and turned around. That’s when I saw Sam standing there with a gun held up which was pointing to Kate. I then looked at Kate who was on her knees with her hand to her stomach. I thought she was right behind me, but I guess not. I ran back to her with my heart pounding out of my chest. When I got to her, she was lying on the ground, eyes wide open and one hand on her stomach. I leaned down to hear her breath but I couldn’t hear it. I then went to feel her pulse. No pulse.

I fell onto her chest and started to burst out with tears. I lay there hugging her motionless body then looked up to Sam; he was standing there with an evil look in his eyes. I stood up with blood all over my body and pointed my finger at him and screamed

“YOU MONSTER!” All he did was laugh manically. I walked up to him and scowled while I looked at him head to toe. He laughed again then said

“You are pathetic, you and you’re little friend.” I hissed at him and subtly slipped my pocket knife out of my back pocket.

“This neve would’ve happened if you kept you’re promise. She might’ve lived. Now it’s your tu-.” That’s when I stabbed him. He became very stiff then fell backwards onto the ground. I smiled in satisfaction then hobbled back to Kate. I looked down at her lying in the long green grass then looked around the barren land for somewhere to go. I then checked my phone for reception. No reception, great. I picked Kate up and walked around trying to find a road. I was walking for about half an hour when I finally found it. It was obviously not a main road because it was dirt instead of ash fault but I decided to follow it anyways. It was around 1 in the afternoon when Kate and I got there but I had been walking for so long that it started to become dark. I started panicking because there were no houses or huts in sight, but I kept walking anyways. By now I was starting to feel a searing pain in my arms.

I kept walking along the long and dusty road until I saw in the far distance a house, not a big one, more like a hut. I got so excited that I started running, I felt no pain in my arms anymore and I felt extremely strong and powerful, I felt no pain or tiredness I was in complete ecstasy. As I got closer and closer my heart started pounding faster and faster, there was no stopping me. I reached the front gate of the hut and stood there for a bit just gazing at it. It was painted black but the paint was peeling off revealing the bricks underneath. The front door was made of wood but the bottom was scraped off and it looked like an animal had tried to get under and out, or in. I slowly and cautiously walked closer to the door and when I got there, I knocked on the door three times. No answer, I knocked again and they door creaked open, I jumped but then calmed myself. I walked in slowly with Kate still in my arms. I peered inside and was completely shocked. The inside was NOTHING like the outside, it was modern and nice. Clean and new. Definitely telling me that I should never judge a book by its cover. I wondered around the house until I found the lounge room, where a little old woman was sitting in a rocking chair with her eyes closed, I said “excuse me” a couple times but she was obviously asleep. Suddenly, her eyes shot open.

I jumped back and my heart skipped a beat. I then slowly got closer to her. I got closer and closer and then her head suddenly shot up right. My heart skipped a beat again.

“Hello?” I asked with a shake in my voice.

“Hello, young lady. How may I help you?” She replied with a croaky voice. I then proceeded to tell her what had just happened and she stood up and looked down at the motionless, cold body that was lying in my hands. I saw fear and sadness in her eyes and she told me to put her down on the couch and to go wash myself up. I washed my face and hands then went back to the couch where Kate was laying. I felt my eyes starting to sting with tears and then I just let the tears roll out of my eyes. My heart also started to sink into my stomach and I started to feel sick. I asked her how far away we were from the nearest town and she said that it was quite far away. I sighed and sat down on the seat next to Kate. The old lady had made some tea and then came and sat down in her rocking chair.

“If you like, you are more than welcome to stay the night and then in the morning I will call a cab for you.” The lady suggested.

“Do you have reception here?” I asked.

“Yes, but only for cabs.” Well that was a bit weird but it’s not like an old grandma is going to hurt me. I picked myself up and walked upstairs into the room that the lady told me to go into. I walked inside the room and looked around. Yes, it is what you think an old persons house is like, decorated with old antiques and smells like grandma. I coughed a couple times then sat down on the bed. As soon as I sat on the bed, a whole lot of dust flew into the air. There was so much dust in the air that I couldn’t see out of the door, in fact, I couldn’t even see the door. Once again I coughed and tried to move the dust away from my face. This room really needs a makeover. Too bad I don’t have anything with me. I am definitely going to come back here one day, give the house a makeover and help the old lady. That is if she hasn’t died yet. Touch wood.

I went into the bathroom and cleaned myself up properly then wacked my bed again to get the rest of the dust out then hopped in the bed. Before I knew it, I was fast asleep.

************************************************************************************************

I woke up suddenly and my heart was racing. I had no idea why. I sat up and looked to the door where I saw the old lady staring at me. That’s kind of creepy.

“Good morning!” She finally said.

“Umm, Good morning.” I replied

“Why were you standing at my door while I was asleep?”

“Oh, that...You look cute when you sleep.” Again, a little bit creepy but again, she can’t hurt me. She is just an old little lady. I got up as she left the room and cleaned myself up. I walked down stairs and saw Kate on the couch. I sat next to her and felt her hand, ice cold. Tears started pouring into my eyes again and I just broke down. I felt the lady comforting me and I looked up at her in confusion.

“I never got to know your name.” I asked her. She really didn’t ever tell me her name.

“Oh! That’s right...My name is Elizabeth. You can call me Elle, everyone that knows me does.” Alright, so I know her name now. We both went downstairs and we sat down again on the couch. I asked her about the taxis and she got up and called one. When she came back, she started to come onto me. I got really confused and worried. This old woman was coming onto me, what is happening to the world?! She backed away for a second then grabbed her neck and started to rip off her skin. WHAT?! Before I could say anything, she ripped off her body as well. Now this little old lady was a big, ugly man. WTF?! What happened? I screamed, picked up Kate and ran out the door with this man right behind me. The taxi had just pulled up and I jumped in and screamed to the driver to start driving into town. We finally got away from the creepy she-male and I took a sigh of relief. I looked at the taxi driver and he didn’t look much safer, at least he isn’t a she-male. We got into town and I gave the driver the money that the creepy man gave me.

I walked around town for a while trying to find some way of getting home. I got a lot of odd stares from many people but I didn’t care. I walked around for about an hour and then I finally found a train station. I got up to the counter to buy some tickets.

“Hi, ticket for one to Sydney.”

“What about her?” The person at the counter said pointing to Kate.

“She’s...dead.” I said with a sinking heart.

“Yeah right, I wasn’t born yesterday!” They said with a cocky voice.

“You really don’t believe me? Then feel her pulse!” They stuck their hand out and felt for her pulse. Their cocky smile suddenly grew into a frown.

“Wh-What happened to her?” The person at the counter asked.

“Long story, can I please get my ticket now?” I said impatiently.

“Here take the ticket, for free. Looks like you’ve gone through enough already.” I thanked them then ran down to the train. I saw the train so close to leaving so I jumped onto it and sat down. I put Kate down on the seat next to me and I started getting emotional again. Seeing your dead best friend every couple of minutes will do that to you. It took a couple of hours to get to Sydney but when we got there I was so relieved. I whipped out my phone and called mum. The phone rang a couple of times before she picked up.

“Hello?”

“Hi mum, I’m back.”

“Oh my g-d! I’ve been worried sick! Are you alright?”

“Yes mum, I’m fine. But Kate on the other hand...”

“What happened to Kate?”

“Well you know that guy that she has been dating?”

“Yes...”

“Well he turned out to be a murder. Kate’s dead.” There was nothing but silence at on the other end. I could tell that mum was devastated. How were we going to tell her parents?

“This is horrible. Where are you now? I’ll come and pick you up.”

“I’m at the train station.”

“I’ll be there soon.” I hung up and looked around. The station was PACKED! I had to get out of there. I pushed my way through people and up the stairs. As I got to the top of the staircase, I smelled something that drew me towards it. McDonalds. I have a weak spot for some good maccas. I checked to see how much change I had gotten from the taxi driver. $1.95, enough for a BLT. YES! BLT’s are my favourite. I put Kate down near a rubbish bin and went up to order, luckily the line wasn’t too long and I got my meal within 5 minutes. I went back to get Kate but I couldn’t find her, where could she go, it’s not like she got up and left! I started panicking then looked on the other side of the bin. Found her. That was one of the most frightening moments of my life! Now it’s all over. I sat down and ate my BLT then picked up Kate and headed outside. Again, I got weird looks from people but I still didn’t care. I saw my mum’s car pull up on the side of the road. I hoped in the car and put Kate in the boot. Mum didn’t want to see her like that. We started driving and I knew that at any second she would ask me for the full story.

“So, what really did happen?” Mum asked. Wow, she’s just THAT predictable.

“Mum, I’m not in the mood right now, my best friend just died, I just killed someone and I was this close to getting raped.” I saw her expression grow more confused as I talked but she didn’t say anything.

We got home and I jumped straight into the shower to REALLY wash myself while mum took care of Kate and telling her parents. I heard sobs coming from downstairs as I got out of the shower. I walked down to see both of Kate’s parents draped over her body in tears. It made me get emotional again. I snuggled up to mum and had a good cry myself. My mum started crying and our house turned into a cry fest.

The last couple of days have been really hard for both my family and Kate’s family. We have decided to have a funeral and it’s been decided to be in a week’s time. We decided to have the funeral at the same graveyard where Kate’s close grandma was buried.

It’s the day of the funeral and I have been asked to say a few words. Since I can’t explain who Kate is in a “few words” I asked if it was ok for me to tell the story of meeting Sam and how the whole thing started. I knew that it would make everyone emotional, including me, but I wanted everyone to know the true story of Sam.

I dressed up in a long, black dress with lace at the top and a black hat with the net falling over my eyes. I walked out the door and into the car where mum and dad were waiting. I signalled to dad to start driving and from then on I was completely zoned out. I couldn’t stop thinking about how Sam had tricked us and pulled us into his trap.

We got to the graveyard and found our way through the tombstones to where Kate was being buried. I placed the Lilies i bought her on her coffin because Lilies were her favourite flowers. I walked over to the chairs and sat down. I listened to the man speaking but I didn’t really acknowledge what he was really saying.

Hello?

Hello?

Hello?

Are you awake?

“Yes, yes. I am awake, sorry about that. Where were we?”

“It’s your turn to talk.”

“Oh ok.” So I got up to the podium, looked around the sad and lonesome faces hanging in sadness.

“Hi, my names Jessica and I was Kate’s best friend and she was mine. We were closer than anyone you could’ve known. I was asked to talk about her in a few words today but I found that impossible. It IS impossible to describe Kate in just a few words, in fact, it’s impossible to describe her in any words really. So I asked if I could tell everyone what really happened to Kate and who Sam actually was. It all started on the 16 of August. Kate and I were in a MASSIVE fight with our other friends and we still stuck together. We went back to my place and decided to forget about them. We went on the internet and we went onto a chat room. That’s when we met Sam. At first we didn’t think he was really the age he said he was because we were pretty safe with the internet but eventually he seemed pretty legit. He talked like a true teenager and he acted like one. Kate, Sam and I had started to become good friends. We talked a lot about how things were going at school and about all our friends ditching us. One day we had an unusual conversation.

“Hi chickies”

“Hey Sam”

“How are you guys?”

“Pretty good thanks n u?”

“Im gwd thnx.”

“That’s good.”

“So, I was wondering...um...well.....we have been talking for a while but we have never met, so umm.....do you guys wanna meet up with me?”

We thought that after all this time he was a pretty legit guy and if something went wrong we always had each other so we agreed.

He told us to meet him under the big willow tree in the middle of the park across the street from me the next day. So, Kate slept over at my house and the next morning we got ready and headed down to the park. We sat down and waited. And waited. And waited some more but he didn’t come so we decided to leave and go off at him online. By then we had already got his facebook and he had 299 photos of himself which looked real and were all of the same person and not like they were taken from the internet. When we got home, we went straight onto facebook, msn and the chat room where we met him. Sure enough, he wasn’t on. So instead of giving up, we waited until he came on. He didn’t come online at all that night, what a p***y. Kate slept over and we checked again the whole day after, we practically did not take our eyes away from the screen, but still, no Sam. Too afraid to show his face. The next day, still no Sam and as we were about to give up, he came online the day after that. We started going off at him about not coming then being a woos. As we were tying then entering, typing then entering, we didn’t see Sam reply until the end of our tirade. We stopped and asked him if he had anything to say.

“Yes, yes i know that I didn’t meet up with you guys and that I didn’t come on but that was because my mum...she’s just got into hospital and she has been diagnosed with lung cancer, none of us know how she got it because she has NEVER smoked and she is NEVER around smokers. I know that I ditched you but that was when I found out about her and I have been visiting her for the past few days, I’m sorry. Can we meet up again?”

Me and Kate just sat there with our mouths dangling open while we thought about what we had just said to someone that has their mother in hospital.

“I...I’m....s-so.....sorry.” I typed as if I was actually stuttering.

“It’s alright; I mean you didn’t know and I forgive you.” He replied. Thank g-d for that. I can’t believe his mum is in hospital, fighting cancer. That’s got to be hard to deal with. I looked at Kate with a sorry expression on my face and she returned the same expression. Then we both looked at the screen and I gestured to her that we should get offline because I am speechless.

“Umm, Sam? Me and Kate g2g...talk again l8er?”

“Cya, I think I’ll go back to the hospital now.” Kate and I logged off then got off the computer and just sat on my bed looking at each other. We both felt terrible. With her mum’s permission, Kate slept over once again and the next day we went to see if Sam was online. Yes, he was. We started talking again, asking him about his mum and how she was going. She had been struggling to fight against it but she had lots of support around her. Then we got to the subject of meeting up again. He told us to meet him at 1 o’clock under the same tree in the same park that we were meant to meet last time.

Kate and I headed for the door and 5 to 1 and started walking to the park. I looked down at my watch when we got there and it was exactly 1. We walked up to a tree when we saw a figure emerge from the shade of the tree. He was dressed all in black and he had a hoodie on which was covering his face.

“S-Sam?” I asked. He took off his hoodie that revealed his face. He had short jet black hair that poked up, tanned skin, chocolate brown eyes and he was quite short.

“Hi, ladies.” We both smiled. We had finally met this guy that we have been talking to for a long time.

“O.k., before you tell me who is who, let me guess. I’m guessing you are Kate.” He said pointing to me.

“And you are Jessica.” He said pointing to Kate. We both burst out with laughter and shook our heads.

“Swap them around, I’m Jessica and that’s Kate.” I said in between giggles and gesturing to Kate.

“Oh, ok hahaha. Wow, we finally met.” I laughed then looked over at Kate who was just staring at him in amazement. She was so checking him out. I mean, he is good looking but not that good but it didn’t seem like Kate would agree with me. I nudged her and gave her the “I know what you’re thinking and stop thinking it” look. It’s amazing how best friends can talk to each other without even having to say a word, just gesturing. She blushed, giggled then looked down at her feet. I laughed then looked at Sam who looked quite confused. We all walked closer to the tree and sat down in a triangle. We talked talked and talked some more and before we knew it, it was already starting to get dark. We got up, said goodbye to each other, Sam and Kate hugged. They really hit it off. Then we all went our separate ways. When I got home, I lay down in bed with my new favourite book to read, “The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas”. I watched the movie some time ago and I cried so much. So I decided to start reading the book. Before I knew it, I was fast asleep.

I woke up the next day and went straight online to see how Kate was going.

“Hey Kat.” I call her Kat.

“Hey Jess, OMG i have the most amazing thing to tell you.”

“What?!”

“Well, you know how I obviously like Sam.”

“Yeah...?”

“Well, last night, we talked until 2 am. I think he likes me. I really want him to ask me out.”

“OMG! Really?! That’s great Kat!”

J

“So what you up to today?”

“Oh umm, nothing really. You?”

“Probs gonna stay home...watch a movie...wanna join?”

“Sure, be there in 10.” I smiled, logged off then went and got changed into my favourite summery dress. It’s yellow with orange flowers all over. It may seem disgusting but I love it.

Kate arrived at my house and we sat down and watched a movie. I forgot the name of it but I know it was about a girl that falls in love with this guy and he takes her out to the middle of nowhere and kills her with her best friend standing right there. Sound familiar? But at the time, me and Kate were completely oblivious to what could happen and we weren’t worried at all when we watched the movie when we should’ve been. We went online again and saw Sam on.

“Hey Sammyy!”

“Heyy girls”

“What you up to today?”

“Ohh, nm probs gonna stay at home. FUN! K...u?”

“Ahahahahahha we just finished a movie and now we are gonna go down to the pool.”

“Cool! Mind if I join?”

“Course not! Meet you there in 20”

“Cya then” We logged off once again and I could practically hear Kate’s heart pounding out of her chest at 100 kilometres per hour! She was completely infatuated with this guy and I couldn’t do anything about it. When we got down to the pool we met up with Sam and we had some fun until Sam walked up to Kate and asked her to be his girlfriend. As soon as he said that, I ran behind Kate and tried to prevent her from falling.

“Y-y-yes!” She stuttered. I laughed and they hugged. They were such a cute couple.

After that, Kate and Sam were practically inseparable. They did everything with each other and never left each other’s side. I was always kind of the third wheel, but I didn’t care because I knew that Kate cared about him and that she was always there for me.

Weeks went past and they grew closer and closer until one day. Sam got a frantic phone call from the local hospital telling him to rush down there as quickly as he can. Kate and I followed as we caught a taxi and raced down to the hospital. As we got there, we saw surgeons running all around the place in complete confusion. We became confused and asked what was happening. The receptionist told us that Sam’s mum was on the borderline of life and death. Sam collapsed as he heard that. Kate fell down to his side and tried to wake him up. Eventually he woke up and by then, his mother had already died. Sam fell into Kate’s shoulder and started crying.

Sam didn’t talk to either of us for about 2 weeks after that. Kate started getting depressed because she wasn’t around him and whenever I tried to comfort her, she would just push me away. Kate and I grew apart from that but we were still friends. We didn’t have any more sleepovers and we didn’t meet up every day. I started to really miss her and it was hard for me to deal with it because we were such good friends. We kept drifting further and further apart. Eventually both Kate and Sam calmed down and we all drifted closer again. Kate and I became good friends again and Sam and Kate were closer than ever.

Then one day, Sam asked Kate if she wanted to go on a trip with him. She agreed and invited me. We met up at the park again and we hopped in the car and started driving. It took about a day to get to where he wanted to go. When we got there, we got out of the car, stretched and looked around. I saw a wide stretch of yellow grass and the sun was blazing down on us. I looked at Kate and she gave the “I have no idea where we are either” look. I felt a strange tingle go down my spine, not a normal one, but one that made me feel that something bad was about to happen. I grabbed Kate’s hand and we followed Sam out to the middle of the field.

“What’s going on here?” I heard Kate say.

“You’ll see.” He said. I kept thinking to myself that nothing good can come out of this. Kate and I kept walking until we saw Sam turn around, then we stopped walking abruptly. I saw Sam open his coat to reveal something in the pocket inside the coat. IT WAS A GUN! I screamed and started running and I thought that Kate was right behind me, I kept shouting at her to hurry up but I didn’t look back just in case Sam was following us. I still thought she was following me until I heard the
