"

The curse of Stray Hearts Hill... was it true all along?

"

“Don’t play with food, Hon,” I heard my mom say.

“Come on Grace, the kid’s old enough to know that! Let ‘im be!” Nick, her second husband, said. He was probably trying to look good to me. Well, it’s not that I hate him, but I don’t particularly like him as well. For one, he smells terribly bad. Ever smelled a person who hasn’t showered for a month? You probably never want to know what that is like.

“Is it about a girl, kiddo?” He whispered to me. I held on my breath. Gawd dots an owful smwell!

I stood up as quickly as I could, “I’m done!”

“You barely touched your food,”

I didn’t respond and instead, headed straight for my room.

My real dad? Heh. He ran off with some other woman three years ago. Not that I blame him for that. My mother is nothing but mouth. What I can't forgive him is because he left me with this woman. I’m actually surprised Nick could stand her. Huh. She probably can’t open her loud mouth because of the odor. Good for both of them.

I closed my door.

It was only two weeks since we’ve been living in the old wooden house but I felt like I couldn’t last any longer. Why the stupid house! Other than the stench, I didn’t feel like what I was doing here was living. I felt this was a huge coffin--my final resting place.

I took the pen and my notebook and lay down on my bed to read what I had written there so far. Sigh. Yeah, I remembered. I wasn’t able to write thanks to that girl, Leah.

What do you seek for,’ her words echoed in my head. The more I played it in my mind, the more I thought I was looking for something. Stray Hearts Hill… what are your secrets? I let out a grim laugh. I think I’ve gone crazy.

A while later, I heard fighting from outside. I opened the windows and peeped out to see what the fuss was all about.

Oh and I’m at fault now?!” The girl shouted.

Who else? You’re the one who--

What the hell are you talking about!? You were the one who said I should take it!

But I didn’t really think you’d actually do it! I was kidding! And you are stupid enough to--”

“STUPID?! Oh no you didn’t! You know what? Let’s break up.”

“Hey, hey, now what’s that huh!?”

“Let’s break up!!”

“You really want that?!”

The girl didn’t reply.

With a loud curse that probably woke up the entire neighborhood, the guy went off, kicking a car’s tire on the way.

As the girl went off, the light of the post lamp touched her messed up face. And then, I gawked. What the--I was in a loss for words. The girl was the one I saw earlier on the hill, one of the lovers.

‘…they break up’ Leah’s words rang out loud and I hissed, “Damn you, are you a witch or something?” Was the curse of the Hill true? I was dying for the answer.

I sat down my bed, thoughts running aimlessly. What did I seek for? What was to be found in the first place? My head started pounding. I probably should have eaten more, and then maybe I could think straight.

Is he going to be alright? I heard my mother from outside the door. They were probably heading for their room, the one in front of mine.

He’s going to be fine! He’s a man now, Nick said.

I closed my eyes for a moment… and then I knew what to do.

“What I seek for…” I whispered to myself. Perhaps Leah knew, I should probably ask her next time. Yeah, I probably should.

You introduce Nick and Danny's mother. They are well developed. Then you introduce the man and woman that were on the hill having a fight. I'm not sure where that is going. I'm not sure that they would want other people to hear the yelling. Then you bring Leah back into the story. So there is more to come with that.
