I Have to Sit at This Table

I Have to Sit at This Table

A Poem by Elizabeth Gallegos

Ugh I have to sit at this table
day in and day out
I have to sit at this table
without complain or pouts
I guess it's better than sitting with Ignacio and Frank
Right?
I have to sit at this table
The teacher placed me here
The other me is across from me on the right
The class clown is across from me on the left
Next to me is an old friend who is barely talking to me
The other me likes to talk
I'm very quiet
It's like I'm not even there
The class clown is laughing every five seconds for no reason
And my old friend is doing homework at the last minute
To tell you the truth
Looking back
It's better than sitting than sitting with Ignacio and Frank
Right?

Author's Note

Elizabeth Gallegos
If you don't understand what this poem is about it is explaining how you feel when you are in school and the teacher switches your seats in the class. You usually dread it because you were used to your old desk and it's even worse when your school has those desks that make you share the desks with other people instead of having an individual desk. The other me is referencing a girl who also has the same name as me. The class clown is a kid in my class who loves to crack jokes in every class and my old friend is someone I have known for a while.

I like it. My school days we had to grab the one we wanted, and if your friends were there, hopefully they managed to be close. Then, the teacher would move you around.
