SNAKES AND LADDERS

SNAKES AND LADDERS

A Poem by Elise Anton
"

Pink best reflects the effect of discord.

"

Deep sky above, soft breeze,

the sound of distant waves

and gently swaying gum-trees.

He over there. Whoever.

Some office tower

gazing up at the backside power

of those on higher floors

as others stare at his backside

envying his new glass doors.

Sly corporate snakes

drop him for a while

and previous mistakes,

ridicule him from above

as he now shakes,

grasping the ladder tight,

another parasite.

He dare judge me.

I walk on level ground.

And when I fall, I stand, rebound

for I have landed on soft sand

not in some sucker's wonderland.

He gasps at my bare feet

dirtied by the long walk back.

His mind a balance sheet

"Can't take this in the sack,”

I hear him thinking.

Absolutely.

So let's agree to be

just tolerantly dishonest

forget the summary

and all the other nonsense.

Piss off politely, return unlikely.

I walk on level ground.

And when I fall, I stand, rebound

for I have landed on soft sand

not in some sucker's wonderland

I love this part the most, it shows how confident and proud the speaker is. This poem has a surface meaning and a deep meaning, one that talks about company people who live high in skyscrapers and look down on common people, the other meaning talks about two personalities a down-to-earth personality and a materialistic one. I completely agree with Insight's review - those four lines are a stunning marvel of twisting the saying 'fall down, get back up'. Fresh and unique, I love it to bits! And may even start quoting it at people who annoy me :p

this reminds me of john melancamp's "Pink Houses"

"there are people and more people, what do they know? go to work in some high rise and vacation down the gulf of mexico" and yet there is the "black man with a black cat living in the black neighborhood, think's he's got it so good" because an interstate is running through his back yard...progress, technology, business and high rise, high raise employees...the money makers and money shakers...

and down below, the real people...the ones with blue collars and sore backs.

well expressed.
