DQA Chapter by Elena HazzardWe walked along the grassy field, past the bleachers, where couples were making out. Rainbow Nike sniggered and hurried past them, the other two girls falling close behind. I struggled to keep up, my sandals sinking into the muddy ground. "Where do you want to go?" I asked. "I don't know." She said. "How about DQ?" I said and then stopped. "Hold up!" I said, we were standing on the sidewalk across from DQ, and even though there was 10 seconds left to cross the street, I needed to know something. "What are you guys names?" I said, and adjusted my skirt absentmindedly. All of the sudden they started laughing, their laughs mixing into a beautiful sound, full of different tones and pitches. "Im so sorry!" Rainbow Nike said and stuck out her hand. "My names Misty." She said and shook my hand, and then stepped back for the next person. "My name is Susan." The other one said. Her hair was naturally dark, and swung gorgeously around her shoulders, framing her face. "I'm Kate." the last one said. Her white hair hung in front of one of her hazel eyes, and she blew it softly away. I smiled at the three girls, all different in their own way. They smiled back and we stood there, awkward, as we waited for the light to turn white again, signaling us to walk. Pushing open the door I motioned them inside "Thanks!" Kate said, and rushed by, money clasped tightly in her hand, as if afraid that someone was going to come by and steal it from her. Hmm? I wondered, but thought nothing of it. I had forgotten money, but it was fine. The fact was, I wasn't in school, and that was all that really mattered to me. "I'll buy you one" Misty said, and gave me a tiny take out menu. I immediately handed it back, her eyebrow raised in question. "I just want a vanilla soft serve." I answered and shrugged my shoulders. Its what I always got, and she grinned, paying for me. Putting it on my list of things to do, I tried to remember to pay her back. We sat down at a plastic table, taking small bites of the certain ice creams that we had got. "So?" I asked, and splayed my hands out on the table. "Tell me about yourselves." © 2016 Elena Hazzard |
