I AM NOT A POET

 

 

I am not an elegist
I am only a man who picks up a pen
I write the thoughts that cross my mind
and then I put the pen down again

 

For this I am called a poet
but few really understand
A poet is a bard of beauty
I just write as a man

 

I aspire to be a poet
An odist to the eclectic divine
A lyricist that expresses the wonders
That lie in the depths of time

 

For now I will just be a writer
That dreams of the poet he may be
Looking and scribing in honesty
All the majesty that God allows me to see.

I aspire to be a good poet but I don't think I am there yet. One day I will be as I open myself up to God's wonder.

and yes, i agree we all as human can only work, rest all is on God... he grants us what we truly deserve and at the right time, all i think we need is patience...:)

I agree Saumya. As I often say: a poet is a man that is inspired to write something significant. Not all of us can say we have had the inspiration. One day I hope to be able to say that. Writing is a talent. To touch others with your writing is a gift. I pray that we are all blessed enough to be inspired.

I'd say you're not giving yourself enough credit, Eddie. Beauty is always in the eye of the beholder and I've seen beauty in your work. Beauty is not just the physical attractiveness of the thing described, it is found in its truth, sincerity, honesty, strength, fortitude, etc, etc. And I have seen much of that in your work. You are a poet in my book, Eddie.

Yet another truly beautiful poem Eddie! The title of poet is and should be a rarity. Only a select few genuinely deserve the title. A famous poet once said (I'm not sure who) "Poetry is the highest form of human activity." I'm not sure that I agree with that completely but poetry sure is a beautiful thing. Keep aspiring... I have no doubt you can reach it.

It is only by constantly 'grading' ourselves that we know how far along we have come - this is such a grading type of writing

We must all grade ourselves and see our talent for what it is. We can say we are poets but the truth is that discernment comes from our readers. a poet is a man that is inspired to write something significant. Not all of us can say we have had the inspiration. I think we all think of ourselves as "poets in training" - striving to get there someday, but never seeing our own words as good enough. But Eddie - you write your heart and soul on the page... you are a poet. :) Great write!

Aww thank you for those kind words. I strive to be worthy of that title. I know that God has given me talent but I look to be inspired. Writing something that touches a person's heart lets me know that I am using my gift. I don't feel I have done that but I strive for it every time I write. Thank you Rita. Rosaria I know I have been blessed with talent. I tell people all the time that a poet is a person that is inspired to write something significant. They write based off of inspiration, not all of us can say we have had true inspiration. One day I hope to be able to say that. Writing is a talent. To touch others with your writing is the gift. I hope one day to share that gift and have the reader call me a poet for it. Only then can I say that I was a poet. I thank you for your kind words and thoughtful review.
