I OWE YOU NOTHING

I OWE YOU NOTHING

A Poem by Eddie Phillips
"

Don't be a item. Be someones prize. Something that they cherish. Never lose your pride.

"

Stepping into my own means I paid all that was owed.
I will no longer pay a toll to your ever devouring troll.
For years you have dogged me; taking everything I have.
You treated me like a slave and laughed when things got bad.
I became your project and I was afraid to let you go.
You paid for my devotion with your fancy cars and flashy clothes.

To you I was always tethered; you would never set me free.
You decided every destination and everyone we'd ever see.
When you are a toy for pleasure you rarely see the day.
You get pulled out of the closet only when someone wants to play.
It took a while to find me; I was lost in my utter shame.
I finally found my worth and things will never be the same.

I owe you absolutely nothing because I paid it all with my pride.
I gave you all my passion, while you destroyed my worth inside.
Today I step into my own; I owe you nothing in return.
I am smarter, wiser, and stronger; only owning what I've learned.

The well worn and very true adage springs to mind when reading this super poem; 'Money can't buy love' and you highlight the point well here and a lesson learned !

Splendid poetic literature !

"I owe you absolutely nothing because I paid it all with pride" , that's the attitude :)
yes ofcourse you are "smarter, wiser, and stronger" now .
Loved the sense of salvation.

These two lines really stood out to me:

I owe you absolutely nothing because I paid it all with pride
I gave you all my passion as you destroyed my worth inside

I sure know what that feels like... it's pretty awful.

However, there was good flow throughout the poem and it had a strong finish. A particularly empowering write.

I agree, Eddie. You can do without anyone who treats you badly - you can make your own way without the fancy cars, etc. You now own yourself and that's worth a whole lot more. Good for you! I enjoyed reading this, even if it is not autobiographical.

Deep. It's always good to get out of a bad relationship.

I can relate to this (minus the fancy cars and flashy clothes--he was broke lol). Thank God I am out of that relationship.
This is a powerful piece. You are a talented poet. :)
