The First One

The First One

A Poem by Eddie Phillips

I was nestled in her bosom

She sheltered me from the cold

I was her new baby

only a few months old

I had brother's & sister's around me

they taught me all they knew

I made a lot of mistakes

but still I made it through

She fed me, she clothed me,

She protected me from harm

When I needed a place to sleep

my bed was "forward" in her arms

I walked with legs unsteady the first time she took me out

Got a little sick, but somehow it all worked out

Went through many trials and tests and still she saw me through

Sometimes I failed her, but through each failure I grew.

Now four years later, I finally know my way

but now its time to leave her and move on from her today

I am a little tearful as I turn to leave her now

I turn to salute the Watch & Ensign

and take my last steps across her brow.

I walk down the pier saddened but feeling no regret

I know I'm gonna miss her, but I know I won't forget

My first tour in the Navy, aboard my first great ship.
