Poetry Is...

Poetry Is...

A Poem by Elizabeth Carter
"

I have wondered what poetry really is. Is it the rhyming? No. Maybe it's the stanzas and way you word things. No. I realized that these things don't truly matter. It's what you put in it that counts.

"
What is poetry?

Poetry is discovery.
Finding something new,
That provides a new look on life.

Poetry is relief.
That moment when you learn,
Your father will make it though.

Poetry is fear.
That time, late at night,
That you knew something wasn't right.

Poetry is anger.
Wanting to scream and yell,
Because nobody really understands.

Poetry is pain.
Aching in sorrow,
Because a friend, is no longer a friend.

Poetry is comfort.
A needed hug,
When all you want to do is cry.

Poetry is inspiration.
Looking out into the sky,
And seeing the most beautiful sight in the world.

Poetry is bravery.
Doing what is right,
Even when it is the most difficult thing in the world.

Poetry is jealousy.
Seeing the one you love,
With an undeserving, ungrateful other.

Poetry is joy.
Seeing your best friend get off the plane,
And running to them with a big smile.

Poetry is loss.
Having the only important thing in your life,
Ripped from your grasp.

Poetry is admiration.
Finding a child,
Doing their absolute best to please you.

Poetry is passion.
Giving your all,
To something that you desire and love.

Poetry is excitement.
That skipped heartbeat,
When you see the one who holds your heart.

Poetry is confusion.
Not knowing where to go, or what to do,
In a world that pulls you in every direction.

Poetry is longing.
Wishing, wanting, yearning,
To do that thing you have been afraid to do for so long.

Poetry is love.
Doing a small act of kindness,
for a child, a lover, a parent, or even a stranger, just to show you care.

Poetry is...
Feelings and emotions,
In word form.

This is what poetry is.

Author's Note

Elizabeth Carter
I think my favorite thing about this poem is that the reader can put in any circumstance for each emotion. It doesn't have to be what I wrote. Each person can think of a new description of the emotion "love" or "confusion" or "bravery." I did this as I was writing it. I chose descriptions that I have experienced in my life, and I hope you can relate, and maybe do this too as you read it.

Elizabeth you've done a fantastic job here. This is an excellent definition of all the possible things poetry can be. If someone says they can't relate to at least one thing in here then they're lying. You captured a lot of things that people write about especially about undeserving love and best friends. Well done

A very accurate poem about poetry. There was just enough of a human touch to it without weighing the poem down. Overall it was very well written and seems nearly flawless.

Very nice attempt at the definition of the unidentifiable.
I enjoyed the format and the flow was outstanding!

you have an amazing ability to write from the heart, this is only the second piece of yours I have seen. You nailed this one as well. this could have been a writing exercise piece but because you drew from your experiences in the past you get to the emotion behind the definitions.

another wonderful write.

You have covered a lot of bases with the many stanzas, which go together to make a great read that I agree with. There are some I might miss out and some others I might include, but I can really relate to this, thank-you and keep on writing
