PrologueA Chapter by E. Kang
All things evil dwell on Earth. All things pure dwell on Amalynt. Earth is polluted. Amalynt is vibrant. War rages on Earth every single day. The concept of war is foreign to Amalynians. Diseases exist on Earth; sickness sweeps through humans, causing pain and death. Amalynt is a world in which neither disease nor sickness has any chance of causing misery; pain is rare. Humans are unaware of the Amalynians' existence. Amalynians, on the other hand, know of humans.
All the High Council members passed from their world onto Earth out of curiosity, but only once, a long time ago. After seeing the violence and filth of human beings, they left, determined to never come back, determined to get back to their beautiful world where everything made sense to them. The Amalynians did not understand killing. They did not understand the display of senseless violence they witnessed during their brief visit on Earth. They understood danger and death, but not intentional killing. Humans did not have powers that the Amalynians have always had. Humans were very different from the Amalynians. And that frightened them. What the Amalynians failed to understand was that they had passed through in a time of war, and that human beings were not always fighting and killing. But through this visit, they learned something very important about themselves. Evil can change them, as well as anger. One Amalynian, High Council member Kendall, made the mistake of trying to help an injured human on the battlefield, but when that human died, he got angry. Angry at humans for the way they so easily murdered each other, angry at the fact that he hadn't been able to save the unfortunate human being. It was a strange emotion for Amalynians to feel, and Kendall was the first Amalynian to ever get angry. But the hot rage he felt soon passed as the High Council returned to their beautiful home world. In the castle in which the High Council all lived together, High Council member Kendall changed. He became violent, killing a fellow High Council member. No one knew the cause of this sudden outburst. It was less than 24 hours since their journey to Earth and back. They determined that Kendall was sick, for his skin had turned a dark shade of gray, and his eyes had turned completely black. They did not understand the true horror of Kendall's so called "illness". Kendall managed to kill all but 2 members of the High Council. The remaining 2 members locked Kendall up in the cellars of their castle. They did not know how to cure Kendall. They knew that what was wrong with Kendall was no mere illness. It was a disease. A disease that was the result of traveling to Earth. They knew that much. The 2 High Council members didn't know how to fix Kendall or what to do with him; they didn't have the heart to kill him. The only thing they could do in order to protect the rest of the Amalynians was to leave him locked in the cellar until he died. It was a wonder that they managed to hide this from the rest of their world. They gave Kendall a title "Herrenian", which was equivalent to the word "fallen" in their language. Fallen as if in defeated. After much debating, the 2 remaining High Council members decided to choose a whole new High Council and tell them of what had happened. The new High Council was warned and trained in case the disease struck again. They chose not to tell anyone outside of the High Council in order to maintain peace and happiness. Only the families of the High Council knew and were prepared. They feared that one day the Herrenians would return, and did all they could to keep their world as pure as it was before the fateful day they entered the atmosphere of Earth.
