Bitter because of him

Bitter because of him

A Poem by eglantine

I hate this rustic church
and the wedding that's
about to take place

and I hate these God-fearing
people and the woman
in a gaudy floral blouse.

I hate that he stole
this from me, dropped
me like a burning cross.

I hate this wooden bench
and each floor-board
and every one of his
damn freckles.

Broken hearts are so cliche
and I hate to mention them,
but here is mine:

    blue-glazed and star-cracked,
    damp and thorned.

A good structure and flow... a bit "hate"-full, but some lives are too.

Well this poem is certainly dripping with bitterness. We should not wish to spoil someone else's parade, just because it rained on ours, but human nature being what it is, we can all fall prey to such feelings. Thankfully, most of us are quite resilient, and we can pull ourselves together (even if it takes times) and move on. A sad and expressive write.

wonderful piece! i love the twist you put on this tender subject, such wrath and hostility, repeated use of "hate" and beautiful details. a lovely despiteful poem for sure.

There is something about the poem that transcends the boundaries between things that are similar with those that aren't. For instance the graduation from the floor board in the church to the freckles. It captures your sadness quite beautifully because only when you ache a lot you do not know why you ache. You forget reason and ache with all your heart. When I left home for the first time when I was young I used to miss home, but I couldn't say exactly what I missed so much. Even a barbed wire appeared beautiful so to speak. So I feel the pulse of the poem. I also note the use of stars which appears as a motief in your work. Loved reading it. Keep writing.
