whispering place

whispering place

A Poem by Ed Hart

the chair

she rescued from the thrift shop

for five dollars

is waiting next to the sofa

to be recushioned

by her farm girl hands

and prettied with a blush of stain

we'll leave the deeper scars

for the wonder of a grandchild

soon to be rocked

still this brings me to tears, this ..... maybe because i love the grandness of putting down roots with "another man's junk" turned into memories coming with the new. history offers comfort, warmth, contours that already fit. just sit back and ..... watch. i do hope you brought your piano, tho. you must play for me -- i'm particularly mourning not being able to play leonard cohen's Hallelujah.

The things we rescue often bring us the most joy and satisfaction.
The deeper scars remain, a testament to the beauty of mystery

at lest on this subject...thank you Mr T
...this is gorgeous, Ed! I love how it unravels, from a chair nobody wanted, to something of absolute splendor! The entire poem made for a lovely journey back in time, to each and every poet who reads it!

i dunno why this brought me swimming eyes and a knot to m'throat ....... perhaps tis that life redefines, repositions the heart ... watches the world carry on; progeny grow with prominent dimples and innosense and still . . . we hope. i have such a chair.

So simple yet so vibrant with imagery. This makes me feel warm inside just thinking about little grandchildren running around. Beautiful !

hello Natassha, thank you for your warm comment
This is so both so lighthearted and yet so introspective. Wonderful writing! Loved reading it.

Ah, whispering place, rescue, thrift and those exact five dollars might indeed summon words like cozy and uncomplicated. But what of that blush of stain, and the even more problematic ‘deeper scars’ with its suggestion of an irrevocable trauma that gets passed on to the next generation? The poem puts me in mind of a Norman Rockwell who suddenly finds his sentimental shtick all out of place in the rowdy 1960s.

It takes a lifetime of experience to reach that 'whispering place;' come to an understanding of what really matters. Even then, the ability to put pen to paper and communicate in the way you do is granted to so few.

May you long continue to bless those who surround you. Beccy.

Like an old chair itesel, simple and uncomplicated, but is just so and perfectly suited for the occasion.
