Not as we had expectedA Story by Ian Duncan ArbogastHey guys! It's been a long time since I've written something so uh...here you go.The wind was calm and peaceful, the meadow was singing with its subtle motion. Everything was serene, pristine, and normal, aside from the giant mech that was sprawled across the grass, lounging as a human would, inside the cockpit a human, assuming the same pose. The man spoke: "Christ It's been quite some time, well, to me at least. It only happened about a year ago, but back then I'd never felt this kind of air, tasted this kind of freedom. I was a nobody, a loser practically, but if you've seen enough movies, you know that things can change rather quickly. Well, that is exactly the case. They knew it was going to happen, they knew it was coming. Most saw the signs and chose to ignore them. Everyone was speculating, questioning. They had no idea, but they knew something was up. Some thought it would be the government, some thought it would be nature, and some just didn't care, but everyone had a label for it; Y2K, the Apocalypse, Armageddon, the End of Days and honestly, that is exactly what it felt like to me." The floor was musty and the lights were dim, ideal conditions for your average hermit. A beam of light cut through the darkness, an LCD screen of a laptop. It constantly strobed and flashed as points increased and damage was dealt. The man continued: "It was a fairly normal night, 3 cans of Coca Cola and 6 strings of cheese. I was a night owl then and I still am now, the night was always my time to shine, my time to relax. I was always the only one up at this hour, but it was tonight that I wished I hadn't. Being that I am deathly afraid of the dark and what ever may lie within, I frequently scanned the contents of my room for anything suspicious. I sighed with relief and brough my eyes back to the screen. All was well, but suddenly my game crashed, sending me temporarily to a black screen while my desktop loaded. What I saw on my screen that night, at that moment, I will never...ever...forget." "It was a face. Not a ghost, not a demon, nothing supernatural. It was just a very angry man. I saw but one thing in his eyes: blood, the lust...for blood. It chilled me to the bone, it made my heart race, and it made me involuntarily jump from my seat and turn abruptly, just to find that the face...was there no more. Maybe it was just my mom? Maybe someone wanted my attention? I had to find out what it was, so I creeped slowly out of my door and into the hall that connected all of the rooms." "I knocked on my mother's door, softly at first, but growing louder and louder until I finally bursted through the door from impatience and anxiety. Her bed was empty... I rushed to another door, giving it the same treatment, but it too was empty. I was panicking at this point. I rushed to the living room; empty. I dashed to the basement; empty. The house was quiet. It was quiet to a point of insanity. I peered out of the window. Their cars were still there and I had just seen them not too long ago and I prayed that I would soon." "At this point, there was nothing but negative energy flowing through my mind. I was alone and I was damn well aware of it. I opened the front door and began to place one foot in front of the over. Every consecutive step became heavier and heavier. As i dragged my feet, my eyes saw less of reality and more of darkness. Nothing was carrying me further of my own will, I just kept walking...and walking. There was this bright flash, very inhuman and out of place. By time I even realized that it WAS a flash, I had collapsed. This was the end. I had drawn myself to insanity and god knows what else, I was certain of it."
