New

A Poem by Dcael

A new year,
New people.
A new perspective on life.
Out with the old,
In with the new.
But new isn’t as comforting as you may think.
Sometimes it means,
Leaving everything behind.
Regardless of feelings,
People,
Old things.
Old things hold comfort.
Scared of the unknown,
Scared to take a leap.
But maybe that’s the best thing.

Except for the unnecessary comma at the end of line 7, this one is an excellent look at a common human problem: fear in the face of change. As the poet says, "old things hold comfort." Life in the physical universe is, however, dynamic, and cannot be resisted without pain. The last lines represent the right attitude, uncertainty balanced by openness.
