Holy Foods

Holy Foods

Holy foods, odd attempts to
Prove faith beyond ritual,
The end of the week wafer,
Rather, logic, pivotal.

Christ in Maria’s Tortilla
That Ohio nun’s slice of bread
The cross-cooked manna in Brooklyn
Bolsena’s Mass, Eucharist bled.

Fifties Virgin Mary pancakes
Claimed by Georgia to be divine,
Crucifixes in hot cross buns
Fashioning London’s Easter bright.

Naples had the Nazarene’s face
Rising with the pizza crust,
Duyser found atop her grilled cheese,
The Madonna, widely discussed.

Donna burned a pierogi,
Discovering Jesus’ face.
Toledo news ran with it,
Now it’s a holy keepsake.

Down south at Bongo Java,
Seems someone saw Mother T.,
Or, rather the shape of her
Face, the likeness of pastry.

Paula was cooking fishsticks
In Kent, when lo and behold,
One stick stood out from the rest
Bearing Jesus’ face, we’re told.

Such spirited delusions
Among believers abound,
These holy foods containing
Such carbs, calories and pounds.
