![]() Just let me sleepA Poem by Elizabeth A ConnerStars look like crystal candy hanging from the ceiling I can almost taste them if I dream long enough I can almost exhale if I could even fall asleep I wish I could I’d try but the stars in your eyes rain in my mind like glowing snowflakes Shadows on the wall like clouds in the fog and they fill every breath with smoke I choke Like I always do My drunken heart never lets my eyes stay open this long But my sober mind is like the tedious ticking of the clock that spreads my eyelids apart with toothpicks and tape I think I’d like the sunset to come back so I can watch the pink tulip sky blossom and pose with grace before taking a bow Those colors at the start of the night remind me of you Far away and painted like an artist’s canvas Deep and Soon to be dark The sky opens up like rose petals The stars dance for me To watch, I must give them my quiet sleep and dreams of your summer sky eyes My hands shake and I ask them for an encore Curtain call ensues The sun comes up like a fire on the horizon You’re like a fire You’re like the sky You’re like the sun Making my flowers grow and trees flourish And at night They shiver Why do you keep leaving? © 2015 Elizabeth A Conner |
