I opened the doors; he stood before me, dressed in a deep purple, satin shirt. Black pants. His jet black hair was spiked.
I knew he was leaving. But I didn’t want him to go.
“Alice,” he whispered.
Her.
I should have known. His old girl, come crawling back, as he and I both knew she would. Often, he’d whispered her name to the darkness. He dreaded her coming.
As did I.
I closed the door behind me. I didn’t think he noticed, so preoccupied he was with Alice. Her name, her memory- I wanted to scream! It was the only thing I couldn’t rub out, the only person I couldn’t make him forget. I wanted to be the only one in his life.
That meant she had to go.
I slowly advanced and slipped a few buttons from their holes on his shirt, then took precious time to replace them. “Why are you going to see her?” I said softly to his chest as I worked.
There was no reply. I looked up at his face; he was dreamily looking out the window.
I fought a scream. I would never be without her shadow, haunting me as I loved him.
Forbidden love.
He loved another.
I pushed him away and ran to my room, closing my ears to his shouts. My name from his lips followed me down the corridor; even after I slammed the door, I could hear it echo.
Forbidden love. He loved another.
It sang in my mind loudly, reminding me what a dreamer I was. I sobbed into my pillow, tears falling on my black dress. I mourned for the man I had lost, to the woman who had shamed him. That’s why he hid in this house, far away from any other. She had done something so terrible that he could never live it down.
My name was called again, this time from outside my door. I turned away from the sound, wishing I had not come. I should have known the tears that would come, the pain that would break my heart again. I should have foreseen the process it would take. They all went that way sooner or later.
Forbidden love.
My name is Jynx. I am forbidden love.
They all love another.
He called my name again. I lay on my bed, blocking out the sound. I refused to come back, to bow at his feet and hungrily sweep up the morsels he dropped to me. I couldn’t do it again.
Forbidden love.
Jynx.
I heard the door open, and his hands touched my face and arms. I didn’t open my eyes, but listened to his worried questions and heard him speak my name, again and again.
“Jynx! Wake up, Jynx!”
Then all sound dried up and slipped away.
I slowly opened my eyes. His face loomed above me, worried and distraught. His lips formed words I knew. Three words, that I wanted to hear all my life, from anyone.
I love you.
My breathing slowed, and my eyes began to close once more as the world faded away…
I awoke laying not on my bed, but his. Nearby, I heard the sounds of weeping. I turned and saw him sitting on a chair, his head in his hands. He must have heard my dress rustle; his head snapped up, and his eyes watched me again.
I was struck by the amount of care and worry inside them.
“Jynx,” he whispered, as if I would break at the sound of my name. Then louder: “Jynx.”
I was silent, and watched as he walked toward me, suddenly haggard, yet extremely handsome, both at once.
Forbidden love.
He loved another.
His knees bent as he slid onto the bed beside me, and looked down upon me.
Forbidden love.
He loved another.
Slowly, he kissed me.
Forbidden love.
He loved another.
I broke into tears again, and he wiped them away gently. “What is wrong?”
“You do not love me,” I whispered haltingly, staring into his beautiful eyes. “You love her.”
His brows drew together as he became confused. “Her?”
“Alice,” I answered, sounding as if I were biting off the name. I savored the hate I felt for her, stealing the man I wanted so desperately in my dreams.
He smiled. “I never loved her,” he whispered. “I only loved you.”
Dreams are cursed things. That’s what he should have said, but he said nothing. He merely smiled, and kissed my lips. I drowned in the wave of heat that swept over me, but he was gone. Left to see Alice.
Another part of me died that day.
Too many more, and I’ll be gone…
