Sweet, soft light of mercy

Sweet, soft light of mercy

A Poem by Echoes of Eros
"

Sleep in Love’s shadowed bewitchment

"

Eleanor

sweet, soft light of mercy

how you rise from the mists

how you became the burning muse of Cearbhall, who sang

“Mo ghrá thú, den chéad fhéachaint, Eileanóir a Rún”

"From the moment I saw you I loved you, Eleanor my love”

Dance from the enchantments of this magic to ascend into the wildlands as souls sleep

sleep in Love’s shadowed bewitchment.

Author's Note

Echoes of Eros
Eleanor fell in love with the poet Cearbhall but her father would not sanction their marriage. Cearbhall used his magic to put to sleep all the guests at her wedding to another man and they eloped. Some say that they went overseas and that, when Cearbhall was killed in an accident, Eleanor died of grief. A similar story is told of Cearbhall and Fearbhlaidh. Irish folklore recounts how Eileanóir Chaomhánach eloped with Cearbhall the day she was about to marry another man. Cearbhall arrived at the wedding to play music at the wedding feast, and fell in love with the bride. He composed the song Eileanoir a Rún to woo the bride.
"Mo ghrá thú, den chéad fhéachaint, Eileanóir a Rún
Is ort a bhím ag smaoineadh, tráth a mbím i mo shuan
A ghrá den tsaol, is a chéad searc, is tú is deise ná ban Éireann."
"From the moment I saw you I loved you, Eileanóir my love
It is of you I think when I’m resting
O love of life and my first love, you are fairer than all the women of Ireland."
